After reading your comments, I typed "update history" and "update settings" in the bottom search box to find out what's going on with my PC.
As far as I can tell, you can only pause updates for 35 days, not stop them.
Incidentally, when I first installed Windows 10, the feature I disliked more than any other was the change to the function of that search box.
They made it dual purpose, not only searching the PC, but searching the Internet as well & worse still, with Bing.
That's no use when I use it for searching my PC.
I managed to turn that off with some registry edits (found via google), but by the time I put Windows 10 on a PC for my mother, there were menu settings to fix the same problem.
I plan to try Ubuntu or Mint next.
