I’ve seen one document with a small drawing of the plot and lots of official looking stamps and signatures on it. I couldn’t read it so I don’t know how significant it is. However, as it’s in the hands of his cousin who’s the keenest to sell and as she claims the money should be split with twelve relatives I’m assuming it doesn’t support my boyfriend’s case. He’s adamant that the house and the land were left just to him by his father and is refusing to agree to any sale by the others hence blocking it so he’s not popular.

They were all meant to have a meeting a few months ago but the cousin didn't turn up. She doesn't live in Thailand which is yet another complication.

If property ownership is proven by paper documents, wouldn't you keep hold of those documents and ensure only those in the line of succession get hold of them?

There’s many things I can’t fathom in Thailand. I’m not in the least surprised that documents get lost having seen the chaos that many of my boyfriend’s relatives live in.

The sale seems like a pipe dream at almost 4 million for that location and no real proof of ownership. Do yourself a favor stay out of it let him deal with it as nothing is likely to come from it.

The document you describe is the front page of the Chanote (title deed). The back of this document is where the name of the owner is entered. Note, that in Thailand only one owner's name can appear on the Chanote. and that owner has in his/hers possession a "house book" as well"

If other arrangements for the property were made among family members where the property has been promised to other family members (which is not uncommon) - those promises are not legally binding. In-other-words the property only belongs legally to the name shown on the reverse side of the Chanote.

Having said that, I totally agree with what Undaunted said...best to stay clear of this mess and let the Thais sort it out. Sounds like that's what you're doing.
