The Battle for the Senate

Post by readerc54 »

If I had to choose to between control of the White House or control of the Senate, I'd take the latter every day and twice on Sundays. It's the Senate that "advises and consents" to supreme court nominees and cabinet appointments. Little gets done in Washington without its approval.

Washington seems to work best when the House and Senate are controlled by opposing parties because that forces compromise. It also persuades whoever sits in the oval office that he or she must work with both chambers and both parties.

This article looks at 15 key races.

I disagree, some of the most progressive legislation in American history happened when Congress and the Whitehouse were the same party, FDR's NewDeal, LBJ's Great Society, the first years of the Obama administration, and if you are a Republican the first years of the Reagan administration. Tea Party Republicans are incapable of comprise and it's not part of their political philosophy. 10 days ago Democrats control of the Senate was a real possibility but now it's only a 50/50 chance unless there is a massive Democratic turnout at the polls.

With that I agree. And if that unfortunately turns out to be the case, individual Democrats will have to accept the consequences of their lack of interest in the outcome. They can't blame the DNC's get-out-the-vote efforts. The party's field organization is certainly superior to the GOP's.
