Polling in the upcoming referendum on whether or not to allow the draft constitution to be brought into effect will incur a nationwide ban on alcohol sales at shops, bars, restaurants and hotels on Sunday, August 7.
From memory, this is the same as election days --- the ban is from 18:00 on the Saturday (6th) to midnight on Sunday (7th) (don't ask why midnight when the polls close at 20:00!).
In the past Bangkok, bars usually started serving after 8 on Sunday but I have a feeling that Pattaya my have been more strict.
Referendum ---- dry!

I treat these "No Alcohol" days as a Challenge.
I have yet to fail to get drunk.

It's, not the drinking part that gets to me, but the bars being closed for the good times I have with the guys. Oh well.

If the bars are open, but not serving alcohol, you could always sneak in a hip flask and spike your Coca Cola . . .gerefan wrote:I have yet to fail to get drunk.

Re: Referendum ---- dry!
Please think twice before you do this. You could be risking the bar being fined or closing for 3 months AND if you're about to say that the ban is on alcohol SALES, then you don't know much about the way that the authorities or BiB work here.Gaybutton wrote:sneak in a hip flask and spike your Coca Cola . . .

Sorry. I didn't think anyone was going to take it seriously. Another bad joke from GB bites the dust.Bangkokian wrote:Please think twice before you do this.

Re: Referendum ---- dry!
Ha ha. I seriously considered it for a moment until I realised that sneaking in a barrel of Singha might be a bit impractical.
Re: Referendum ---- dry!
My view is that if they offer me an alcoholic drink I accept. If they don't I move on.
If they get caught, that's their problem, they volunteered the drink!

Re: Referendum ---- dry!
As always, I'd expect that alcohol can be had in many places, but you might get to drink your beer from a coffee mug to disguise it. Anything else would be a major surprise. But yes, as mentioned the real problem is that many "entertainment" venues will be closed outright.

Re: Referendum ---- dry!
This is in accordance with the 2016 Referendum Act, which forbids the sale or giveaway of alcohol from 6pm the night before polling day.
Does this mean that I will not be allowed to serve a glass of wine to my friends at dinner? (Not a serious question).
