Subs N Steaks

Post by lvdkeyes »

Don't let the name of this new place mislead you. They have an extensive menu, much more than the name implies. In addition to the steaks and sub sandwiches they have several pasta dishes, chicken dishes, pork, and American burgers etc. The also have Thai food. Last night we went to give it a try. My bf wasn't very hungry so we shared an order of deep fried calamari, delicious and tender, not rubbery at all. We also shared a Caesar salad which was the best I have had in Pattaya, made with real Romaine and a tasty creamy dressing. I ordered a lamb shank with mashed potatoes. It was falling off the bone tender. I never used my knife. I can't remember having a better lamb shank. I had water to drink (20 baht). My bf had a pineapple smoothie. Total bill was 770 baht. No service charge added. It is definitely a keeper for me. It is located where the now defunct Sunrise Tacos was located in Jomtien on Thappraya Rd where it turns and heads to the beach.

My friends and I gave this restaurant a try a week ago and I agree with lvdkeyes. It is the same owner as Sunrise Tacos and the staff was far more attentive and helpful than in the past. All of us really enjoyed our meals and will definitely return.

I haven't tried it yet, but when it's a restaurant that both lvdkeyes and RichLB approve of, that's enough to convince me to want to try it - and soon.

Everyone was very excited when Sunrise Tacos first opened and for quite awhile you couldn't get in. Over time it fizzled out and customers stopped coming. We ate there several times when only one or two other tables were occupied and often enough we were the only customers there. I think the owner was smart to change the format and if it's as good as lvdkeyes and RichLB say it is, and if it stays that way, it should be a success.

I think maybe the problem with Sunrise was that things kept changing and not always for the best. And there are better Tex Mex places around, Mike's for example. I hope Subs N Steaks makes it and doesn't start changing the menu around. I want to try some of the other offerings.

Oh well - a couple friends and I went there this evening to eat dinner. When we got there a sign was on the door - "Closed Monday." Better luck next time . . .

I have eaten there three times and each time the food has been very good. The service can be spotty, especially with a new lady waitress who acts like a Thai ditz. Had the angus burger, pork chop, and hot dog. The owner is American and the menu reflects this. I want to try the Canadian black angus filet next. There is a Thai menu and a chef dedicated to the preparation of the Thai food. The place has some wrinkles to iron out but I see the potential.

What about the hot dog? Is it a Thai hot dog or a real hot dog?

Not sure but it was grilled and tasty. They say they make their own bread and the roll was nice. Comes with Cole slaw and fries, 110 baht.
