"Cooling Centres" in Bangkok

Post by Gaybutton »

I think this is a good idea and ought to spread to other major cities too. With predictions of dangerously high temperatures coming soon, this may help a great many people cope.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has set up a network of 304 "cooling centres" to help residents cope with high temperatures during the summer season.

The initiative was officially launched by Governor Chadchart Sittipunt at Thewet Recreation Centre in Phra Nakhon district on Monday.

The cooling centres feature air-conditioned rooms, ample seating for residents, as well as free drinking water for anyone seeking relief from the heat, he said.

The decision to set up cooling centres across the city was taken after experts warned that summer temperatures in 2026 are likely to exceed figures seen in 2024, which saw several temperature records broken.

The cooling centres have been set up across the city, mostly at schools, vocational training centres, public health service facilities, Culture, Sports and Tourism service centres, and all 50 district offices in Bangkok.

In addition to the cooling centres, BMA has also set up 178 "heat-relief points" in the city's so-called "pocket gardens" and major parks to ensure visitors have somewhere to cool down.

More than 2,800 free water refill stations have also been installed in partnership with the private sector.

City Hall is paying particular attention to vulnerable residents, including the elderly and bedridden patients, who cannot travel to cooling centres. Volunteers and local public health teams will conduct home visits to ensure people have the resources they need to cope with the heat.

The BMA will also issue heat index alerts and safety warnings via the AirBKK application and its website.
