September 5, 2025
Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul has secured enough votes to become Thailand's new prime minister.
He secured over 247 votes from MPs to become the new prime minister, defeating Chaikasem Nitisiri, the Pheu Thai Party’s nominee.
Under the Constitution, a candidate must win at least 247 votes from the 492-member House of Representatives to take office.
In a quarterly Nida Poll released on June 19, Mr Anutin was the fourth most popular choice for prime minister, supported by just 9.64% of respondents. The opinion survey found that the most popular choice was opposition leader and People's Party chief Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, with the support of 31.48%.
