Powerful quake in Myanmar "felt" in Bangkok.

Felt sufficiently for a part constructed building to collapse ?

Admittedly, you can't even trust videos these days, but I suppose it's real.

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday afternoon, with tremors felt in Bangkok.

The Earthquake Observation Division reported that the quake, with a depth of 10 kilometres, occurred at 1.20pm in Mandalay, Myanmar.

The Meteorological Department said the tremors were felt in many parts of Thailand, including Bangkok.

People in the capital evacuated buildings, as businesses announced temporary closures due to the quake.

A high-rise building under construction in Chatuchak district also collapsed due to the quake.

Authorities are assessing the damage and monitoring for aftershocks.

Did anyone else present in Thailand feel anything, especially those of you currently in Bangkok?

Since this earthquake collapsed an under-construction building, I'm wondering what else, if anything, had any structural damage, especially if it happened to any structures we ought to be informed about. Those overpasses in Bangkok seem to manage to collapse often enough even when an earthquake had nothing to do with it.

If you're putting in any measures to resist earthquakes, I believe it's usual to do that as the building goes up. For obvious reasons.

I had a chance to observe a building going up in Japan. They dug down 3 floors and poured an enormous amount of concrete into the basement and foundations. The structure above was quite solid and they had large hydraulic dampers arranged at 45 degrees. Very impressive.
Now that might not be appropriate for Thailand with far lower earthquake risk, but presumably this still should not collapse when so far from the epicentre ?

70 people missing from the Bangkok building. Obviously the prognosis isn't good for anyone in it.

I got a text message from my boyfriend in Bangkok to say he was OK. However, I've been unable to talk to him directly as I can't get through. I wonder if the earthquake has caused some disruption to telecommunications. I will be interested to hear from him if he felt much. He lives in an apartment right on the river.

I’ve now been able to speak to my boyfriend in Bangkok. Fairly typically he slept through the whole thing but a friend said their building did shake. He now has a new phrase in his vocabulary “earth quake” which I helped him to pronounce.

I've also heard from a guy I know in Myanmar who worked at the long closed Cupidol Bar in Boyztown and he says he and his family are OK.

The one thing bugging me, is they say this is magnitude 7.7. But that's measured in Myanmar, several hundred miles away.
What's the magnitude in Bangkok & how does that compare with the maximum expected there ?
