Has anyone else heard the rumors being spread about by various political wonks that predict Trump will drop out of the race if polls indicate he won't win? I can't imagine that happening, but then I can't imagine Trump would actually be the Republican candidate.

I hope that's true. I also hope that's not true. After all, Trump seems to be alienating everyone. Every time he opens his mouth he inserts not only his foot, but a whole shoe store, making it more likely Hillary will win. If he does drop out, I hope he takes Pence with him.

Where are you hearing this? I can't find anything in the media.

With the election only three months away, if Trump does drop out, who will the Republicans get? It's a little late for a new set of primaries and another nominating convention, especially if Trump waits to drop out until much closer to the election date.

I don't think Trump is going to drop out, but I would love to be pleasantly surprised. As for whatever backlash it might cause, I doubt that Trump would give a damn. Trump cares about Trump. I don't think he gives a damn about what it could do to the Republican party. I don't think Trump gives a damn about anything or anyone but himself.

Interviewer: "Mr. Trump, don't you realize what you have done to the Republican party?"
Trump: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

I don't think Trump will opt out either, but if he did there is a mechanism in place that would place the Vice Presidential nominee in the open slot.

Great! The Republicans can go from bad to worse. And considering what that party seems to stand for, I have another idea in mind for where they can go . . .

I also have lately pondered such a bizarre scenario. Let's say, close to November, Clinton has amassed an obviously insurmountable lead in the polls.
I can easily envisage Mr Trump going on TV ~ not sheepishly at all ~ looking straight into the faces of the couple millions of white, nationalist, redneck males who are his Most Faithful and saying something like this:

" ... look folks, I'm tired of this, its all rigged anyway, so I'm back to my next utterly fantastic new skyscraper in New York. Hey, what the hell, I was just joking about this whole President thing anyway ... ".

And naturally: his childish, never-ending narcissism would completely preclude him from ever understanding the obvious irony, hypocrisy, cynicism, shamelessness and utter lack of loyalty implicit in such a move.

Now that I think about it, are you sure about that? To me it makes no sense. Every candidate had to go through a campaign circuit, speeches, town hall meetings, debates, primaries, etc. until the party nominee emerged.

Meanwhile Pence has debated no one, has not had to go through primaries, has only just become the vice presidential candidate, and instead of being selected from among party voters, he was selected by a grand total of one man. And yet if Trump withdraws his candidacy, now Pence would be the nominee?

Yep, those are the rules. I suppose the party could figure out something to circumvent the agreed upon protocol, but Pence was actually voted on by the convention delegates and although he was nominated by just one guy (Trump) it was the delegates who selected him. As awful as Pence is, he - or anyone else - would be far superior to a candidate who appears to have severe psychological problems.

Maybe he does. Even if Trump loses, his political career might not be over. He can always buy a little uninhabited island somewhere and declare himself President.
