Viral Video Reveals Tuk Tuk Robbery Scam

A video going viral on social media over the last week is being used as a warning to tourists and ex-pats alike.

The clip, taken and posted by a Hong Kong tourist, shows him travelling on one of Bangkok’s world famous transport systems, the Tuk Tuk. On his way to a hotel the film clearly shows the Tuk Tuk driver making some sort of hand signal to a following motorcyclist, who then pulls up along side and steals a bag with 13,000 baht, 1000 HK Dollars, a passport and some credit cards.

The theft, which happened on June 30, has been watched by nearly two-million people since it was posted on the Facebook GOtrip page.

The police have not commented although the bike registration plate is easy to see and so an arrest should be a formality.

There has been a great deal of online chat about public transport systems in Bangkok and Pattaya with many stories of tuk tuk drivers taking customers to unwanted destinations such as jewelry stores and restaurants, who are then pressured to buy items.

In Pattaya the common problem is baht bus drivers driving off without returning change from one or five-hundred baht notes. One tourist complained that his driver took off with a one-thousand baht note, almost taking his arm off as he leaned in for his change.

The authorities should be reminded that these are the common problems faced by tourists in Bangkok and Pattaya and not the food kitchen side-cars or beggars they have recently vowed to clean up along Beach Road.
