If the Republicans "dump Trump", who will be the nominee?

Post by Gaybutton »

At the moment, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, it looks like Trump may not be so presumptive after all.

If the Republican convention refuses to nominate Trump, who will be their candidate? After all, they have to nominate somebody, don't they? Who might it be?

Your thoughts?

Maybe him . . . . ?

I've been saying ever since the Trump disaster first started that I think Mitt Romney will end up being nominated - although I don't see how the Repubs could succeed in dumping Trump (but we can hope).

Perhaps the Republicans would save face by having their own nominee rather than Trump in spite of the consequences. In their hearts they cannot vote for Hillary but could vote for Romney . Without support of the Republican party Trump would likely have a difficult time financing his election efforts and probably wither on the vine.

George H.W. Bush, it's about time he gets his second term.

I had no idea this was an option. Thought it was a "done deal" as Jeb Bush once commented.
My take on it is simply that if they do dump Trump then what was the point in going through the whole nomination process in the first place?

Well they still need to come up with some technicality that will allow The Donald's pledged delegates to vote for someone else right away. Crooked and resourceful as they are, it probably can be done somehow. Voters would be quite pissed and the Orange Monster would go berserk, all in all it would be a hilarious thing to watch.

Actually, it could be done. Don't forget, the parties (Republican and Democrats) are not government agencies, but private organizations. As such they can do whatever they want legally. The hope of the Dump Trump movement is to get a rule through the Rules Committee, which meets before the nominating process, that would free delegates to "vote their conscience" and not be bound by their state's primary or caucus. If they did that, all holy hell would break out and such a thing would be unprecedented - but it's possible.

Luckily no chance that will happen and the Democrats will win and get to appoint 3 new Supreme Court nominees.
