I have some unconfirmed and sketchy information that the "police" conducted a raid on soi Twilight, Bangkok last night. Does anyone have more information or a first hand account? What police unit(s) and what was the objective? I was on Soi Wednesday night and missed it all by just one night. I noticed lots of youngish good looking Asian tourists filling the bars, mostly Dream Boys. One old white guy almost went in Dream Boy's, looked at the price, shook his head and gave it a pass.
I used the word "raided" in the title but perhaps a police "visit" was more accurate? These full scale raids with TV cameras and big wigs are not as common as they once were. In Bangkok anyway.
I would be curious if the Army was present? When the Military first took over it appeared they were calling the shots with the police standing contrite in the background.
Soi Twlight raided Thursday night?
Re: Soi Twlight raided Thursday night?
Follow the money trail. Ten years ago, I suspect that underage go go dancers and their employers were the target. I suspect that today it is the foreign workers.

If the police are present @ both ends of the street, I guess it's difficult for any immigrant workers to escape without paying whatever the police require.

Oliver and Jun, you were correct, it was about non-Thai bar workers. It took some time to get any information and it's not consistent but the objective was clearly a raid/visit/edict from ? on having non nationals in the bars working.
So, have are they gone? Not really, just now really hidden. Each bar seems to have their own methods.
Will this pass? Probably. Always has in the past.
I think this was just a soi Twilight action (gay bars) and not on the lady bars, Patpong, Cowboy and Nana. I don't know why and I'm probably better off not being in the loop. One of the lady massage venues, Natree, was shut down after an immigration raid last week. The other 30+ massage venues in the same area and hundreds elsewhere were ignored.
The BF and I once drove along the Mekong on the Thai side from the South corner to the far North East. Every town on the border had one or two night time karaoke/bar/restaurant/motels marked with colored lights. Sometimes it's the only place in town for a sit down meal and a overnight hotel. The food was decent and you did not have to "take" a lady but they were here and there and asked for drinks. We visited many of these joints over this trip and others and without exception the ladies were all from either Lao, Cambodia, or Myanmar, depending on the country on the other side of the Mekong.

The difference between Bangkok and border towns along the border, that there is Farang money in Bangkok. If these foreign ladies were banned in the border town, it would be a loss for everyone: the ladies, the customers and the police. Whereas in Bangkok, these bans which were only temporary in the past, justify bribes which are paid by Farang via extortionate drink prices.
