New face for US $20 bill

Post by Gaybutton »

I wonder how many Americans, if asked whose face is on the $20 bill, would have to think about it - and no surprise if the vast majority get it wrong. Most US currency features the faces of presidents, but not all. Alexander Hamilton is the face on the $10 bill. Benjamin Franklin is the face on the $100 bill.

Andrew Jackson was one of the most controversial presidents. To find out why, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Jackson . Jackson is the current face on the $20 bill.

I also wonder how many Americans are aware that the universal rule about faces on money - it cannot be someone who is still alive.

Because he was so controversial, the US has decided to replace his face with the face of Harriet Tubman. Actually, Jackson's face won't be completely removed. It's going to the back of the bill. Harriet Tubman became famous for her work in the US Civil War and her missions to help slaves escape to freedom. To read about her, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriet_Tubman

I don't dispute that she certainly deserves the honor. However, if the time has come to honor the face of a civil rights leader, I would have chosen Martin Luther King.

Ms. Tubman certainly deserves to be on the $20 bill. She did a lot more for civil rights during a very difficult time than even Dr. King. IMHO.
