The Mask You Live In

This subject is about gender representation, not to be confused with gender identification, i.e., kathoey, ladyboy, etc. Although I suppose there might be some overlap.

There is a film to be released soon that discusses that very subject. It is named "The Mask You Live In," and a trailer is below. Here is a blurb that should serve as an introduction, taken from the website "The Representation Project." The site presents the concept of how big a role the media plays in gender representation. The point is simple, and one we have all been told all our lives, that men should act like men and girls should act like girls. This puts young teens under tremendous pressure while growing up.
There is a direct correlation between media consumption and self-perception: the more hours of TV a girl watches, the less secure she is and the fewer options she thinks she has in life. The more hours a boy watches, the more sexist and violent his views and behavior become.*

It doesn’t have to be that way. Media could do a better job of representing all of us in ways that combat harmful gender stereotypes. Let’s nudge them in that direction.

Sometime in 2015, a film is due for release named "The Mask You Live In." I think as men, we should all be able to identify with this.

There is a similar film already released that discusses girls, named "Miss Representation."

We take so much of the world we live in for granted, as if that is the way it HAS to be because that is the way it IS!
These films challenge us to imagine what our world could be like if we spent some time re-examining the stereotypes and gender assumptions that are such a dominant part of American culture (which, by the way gets exported to far too many other nations!).
The damage done by restricting the imaginable possibilities for boys and girls continues to rob all of us of their talents, gifts and viewpoints.
Thanks for sharing.
I will be looking for ways to promote this powerful movement.
all the best
