Crazy, but True

Post by Gaybutton »

Everyone probably has something incredibly crazy that has happened in his life. I thought it might be fun if some of you post yours. Here's just about the craziest thing that I remember happening in my life:

Many years ago, when I was in my early teens, my mother had been saving her money until she could buy something she really wanted - prescription sunglasses with gold rims. When she finally got it, she proudly wore it wherever we went.

One day my family went to a seafood restaurant in Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay. After we ate we strolled out to the end a long nearby pier. As my mother looked down toward the water, the sunglasses slipped off and went right into the bay. There was nothing we could do about it other than try to console my very upset mother.

That was the end of that - or so I thought.

Around 4 or 5 years later I was in a grocery store. In their paperback book section I noticed the latest edition of "Ripley's Believe It or Not." Back then, they used to publish a paperback book once or twice a year. I almost never stand there leafing through books, but on that day I did. As I was skimming through I noticed an entry that I couldn't believe: "Mr. H. Allen of Baltimore, Maryland, while fishing on the Chesapeake Bay, caught a crab wearing gold rimmed sunglasses."

I couldn't believe my eyes. It had to be. How many people would have gold rimmed sunglasses in the first place? How many of those people would have been wearing them around the Chesapeake Bay? How many of those people would manage to lose them, and lose them in the water? How many of those would end up somehow stuck on a crab? And how many of those crabs would end up being caught? And how many people who had actually caught such a crab would submit a report about it to "Ripley's Believe It or Not"?

By process of elimination, it seemed to me there was no way those sunglasses could have been anything other than my mother's.

I contacted "Ripley's Believe It or Not" and told the story to whoever I was talking to. He said if that's true, the possibility of reuniting the sunglasses with my mother would make a hell of a story. He said he can't give me the contact information for this H. Allen, but he would investigate himself and get back to me.

Months went by. I forgot all about it until one day he called me. He said they still had their record of H. Allen's address. Unfortunately, when they checked it out the current homeowner said Mr. Allen had moved away long ago and he had no idea of his new address. They even tried sending a letter to that address in hopes the post office would forward the letter to wherever Mr. Allen's address is now. There was never a response to their letter.

Oh well, my mother never got her sunglasses back, but to this very day I am still convinced it was my mother's sunglasses.

In my life I've had many crazy things happen to me, but from among all of them this one definitely makes it to the top 5. That's my crazy, but true story. What's yours?

When I was in the Air Force in UK I went into a gay club (membership req). Had a drink. Bartender kept looking at me, Finally he came over and asked me if I was a member. I told him no, but tried to talk my way in as I have been able to do at other clubs. It didn't work, He said I would have to leave when I finished my drink. He was very nice about it.

6 months later I was in Rome on the Spanish Steps and this guy came to me and started saying he knew me from somewhere. I didn't know where until he said what club he worked at. Then I told him he had thrown me out of the club. I told him the circumstances, We laughed. We started dating then. He had a roommate who also had an American bf stationed at a different base from me. I never met the bf.

2 years later after getting out of the Air Force I was in Milwaukee in a crowded bar and saw this guy across the room. We started to wend our way through the crowd when the police came in. Everyone scattered. I lost him. The next week I was in a bar in Chicago and this guy came to me and said "I see you survived the raid." It was the guy from Milwaukee. We talked and ---- you guessed it --- he was the American bf of the bartender's friend. Small world!
