I hope we don't need to do that. I think whatever was causing this has ended. For me, the board has been operating normally at normal speed for the past few hours. If it stays that way for everyone who was affected, at least we will know the problem was temporary.

Gents, you probably have noticed now the board does a quick security verification before you access the board. You have probably seen exactly the same thing on many web sites. This is to help prevent bots. Hopefully this will resolve the slowness problem and prevent it from happening again.

One aspect of this that I do not understand at all is why? What is the advantage to whoever is behind this even if they do manage to get onto the board?

If there is something to "get", I missed it. So - that puts it on my "I Don't Get It" list.

Very simplified explanation: it is like someone is walking by huge parking lot and trying car handles in hopes to find unlocked car for to steal - bots are trying to find account with weak password, to guess password, to find security vulnerability and so on.

Their goal may be (just examples): to hack account and post advertising, to hack forum's software for to use it's mailer system for to send spam to members or to their list of emails, to install virus and infect mobile phones and/or computers of forum users for to scan them for bank passwords and so on... or like with GG forum 2 weeks ago: to hack and blackmail

It is automated process, they did almost 3 mln attempts at past few days. Our server is small, it is hard for it to handle 3 mln requests in short time.

In that case I am doubly glad I do not permit membership access to this board unless I receive an Email from the person seeking membership verifying he is human and not a bot registration attempt. Moses's post above certainly provides good reason why nobody gets in without my approval, and nobody gets approval without that Email.

At least so far, no bot attempts have gotten around that.

The speed of the board is fine now, but it still has the habit of logging me out frequently. The most recent instance was within 2 minutes of logging in.
