As far as I know nothing was felt in Pattaya. I certainly did not feel anything. If anyone did, no matter where you are in Thailand, please post and let us know what you experienced.

Myanmar quakes shake Bangkok

May 18, 2026

Bangkok and at least three provinces were shaken by two moderate earthquakes centered near the southern coast of Myanmar on Monday morning, the Earthquake Observation Division reported.

The tremors caused no damage and no injuries were reported.

The division said the first quake, 5.3 on the Richter scale, was detected at 9.05am Thailand time. Its epicentre was 10 kilometres underground near the southern coast of Myanmar, 247km southwest of Thailand's Mae Sot district in Tak province.

The second, 3.2-magnitude tremor was 10km deep, also near the southern coast of Myanmar, at 9.18am Thailand time.

People in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Lampang and Nonthaburi sent about 40 reports to the division saying they felt the quakes and suffered nausea for short periods. Most of them were in buildings in Bangkok.

The Department of Mineral Resources attributed the quakes to the movement of the Sagaing fault in the Andaman Sea.

Several high-rise buildings in Bangkok were evacuated.

The department said there were no early reports of damage caused by the quakes.

Thailand Structural Engineers Association president Amorn Pimanmas said the moderate earthquakes on Monday had no impact on the structures of buildings in Bangkok, but they could shake because the soft soil foundation under the capital amplified vibrations from the tremors.

Bangkok deputy governor Wisanu Subsompon said structural impact could occur from vibrations measuring 25 milli-G or more (a measurement indicating how violently the ground shakes).

The quakes on Monday morning caused vibrations of only two to four milli-G, recorded at nine buildings in Bangkok equipped with vibration sensors.

A huge earthquake early last year caused building vibrations at the level of 123 milli-G, he said, referring to the Myanmar earthquake which led to the collapse of the 33 storey State Audit Office tower, which was nearing completion, in Bangkok on March 28, 2025.

A 5.3 quake off Myanmar was felt in Bangkok high-rises and parts of Thailand, with no major damage reported so far.

Tremor strikes near Myanmar’s southern coast

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near the southern coast of Myanmar on Monday morning (May 18), with tremors felt by residents in high-rise buildings in Bangkok and several other parts of Thailand.

Thailand’s Earthquake Observation Division reported that the quake occurred at 9.05am Thailand time, with its epicentre at 16.351°N, 96.286°E, near the southern coast of Myanmar. The quake was measured at a depth of 10 kilometres and was located about 247 kilometres southwest of Mae Sot district in Tak province.

Bangkok residents report shaking in tall buildings

Public reports submitted to the Thai Meteorological Department showed that the tremor was felt in many Bangkok districts, particularly in office towers, hospitals, condominiums and other high-rise buildings.

Reports came from areas including Bang Rak, Silom, Suriya Wong, Sathon, Pathum Wan, Wang Mai, Thon Buri, Samre, Bangkok Noi, Siriraj, Lak Si, Thung Song Hong, Khlong Toei, Phra Khanong, Don Mueang, Huai Khwang, Phaya Thai, Chatuchak, Bang Phlat, Phasi Charoen and Thung Khru.

Some residents reported feeling dizzy, seeing curtains, lamps or chandeliers sway, noticing water in bottles move, or feeling buildings shake slightly. Several reports came from upper floors, including offices and condominiums on the 10th to 24th floors.

Tremor also felt outside Bangkok

The tremor was also reported in Nonthaburi, as well as in northern provinces including Lampang and Chiang Mai. In Nonthaburi, reports came from Bang Kruai, while in Chiang Mai, people in Si Phum and Wat Ket areas reported light shaking.

No major damage reported

There were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties following the earthquake.

Authorities and monitoring agencies are expected to continue reviewing the quake’s magnitude, depth and exact epicentre as more seismic data becomes available.

Yes. His apartment block is on the banks of the Chao Phraya river right in the centre of Bangkok. If he's not there he is in Ratchaburi. He just sent a video of heavy rain in Bangkok now.

Maybe that rain will alleviate some of the air pollution problem plaguing Bangkok.
