This year Visakha Bucha Day falls on Sunday, May 31st and Monday, June 1st is the replacement holiday. As this is one of the big Buddhist holidays, I reckon the bars will be closed, but only on the actual day, correct?

As for the bars being closed, not necessarily. We don't know for sure yet. Often on religious holidays the bars are permitted to open, but may not serve alcohol - only soft drinks. We will probably know soon.

Despite the restrictions and religious aspects, does anyone think there won't be drunk driving accidents and deaths that day . . . ?

If anyone wants to drink that day, I would suggest buying your alcohol in advance and keeping it in your room. The restrictions might prohibit sale of alcohol that day, but I know of no restrictions on drinking alcohol you may already have. Even so, I would advise doing your drinking in the privacy of your room and do NOT go out in public if you are even just a little bit intoxicated.

I would also suggest if you are the type who just absolutely must have wine with dinner, then open your wallet and dine at one of the high end hotels that will be permitted to serve alcohol or for that one day - do without.

Whilst bars could open & not serve alcohol, in practice they usually do not.

I suspect that's because:
1 Comfortably over 50% of their customers consume alcoholic drinks.
2 There are plenty of other ways of hooking up with boys.

I thought the rules had been changed so that bars in tourist areas are now allowed to open on religious holidays & there has been at least one instance of that this year. But it's not something I pay a great deal of attention to any more.

There is always one sure way to find out. I think most gay farang staying in Pattaya are most likely staying close to the bar areas, so it can't be all that difficult to step out and check.

One one of my first trips to Thailand, there was a public holiday. I think there were just a couple of bars in Sunee Plaza open. I saw two officials in brown uniforms exit one of those bars and divide the cash between them.

These days, as fas as I can see, if bars are supposed to close on a day, they close.
However, tea money does influence opening hours, to the extent that some bars open all night.

Frankly, I doubt bar closures matter to most members any more.
When I first started visiting Thailand, it really did matter. I'd usually head straight to Classic Boys on Soi Twilight & off one of their gorgeous twinks. On more than one occasion, I arrived on 5 Dec & the bars were closed. Now that was inconvenient. Of course I eventually found a lad in one of the likely places.
These days, bar visits are more of a social experience than a hook up activity.
