Thailand updates rules on sale and consumption of alcohol

Eight new regulations controlling the consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages in certain spaces and areas were announced in the Royal Gazette on Tuesday, May 12, effective immediately.

All eight announcements are part of an update to the original law that dates from 2008, adjusting rules to become more relevant to the current era.

The eight updates are:

1. Prohibition on the sale of alcoholic beverages on roads, on vehicles, or on vehicles located on a road.

2. Prohibition on the sale of alcoholic beverages at train stations and on trains (except for special events held inside the air-conditioned halls of Bangkok Station).

3. Prohibition on the sale or consumption of alcohol at public passenger piers and ferry terminals.

4. Prohibition on the sale or consumption of alcohol at all passenger transport stations nationwide.

5. Prohibition on the sale or consumption of alcohol within factory premises, except at liquor production plants, which may sell alcohol as part of their regular business and it allows tasting during the production process.

6. Prohibition on the sale or consumption of alcohol in areas under the supervision and use of the government, state enterprises and other government agencies, except in areas designated as private residences, clubs or at traditional banquets.

7. Prohibition on the sale or consumption of alcohol in public parks owned by state enterprises or other government agencies.

8. Prohibition on the sale or consumption of alcohol in state enterprises or other government agencies.
