Upcoming changes to your Wise account
Some features of your Wise account are changing.
Effective 3 August 2026, your Customer Agreement will change from Wise Payments Limited to Wise Payments (Thailand) Limited.
This means that when you send, receive, or hold money with Wise, your account will be under Thailand's regulations and overseen by the Bank of Thailand. As a result, some parts of your Wise experience will change.
What’s changing
Sending money
To send transfers between 2 non-Thai bank accounts — for example US to Singapore — payments must go via your Thai account, requiring 2 currency conversions (to THB, then to the destination currency). This will increase the total transfer cost.
You’ll now be able to send money abroad directly from your Thai bank account at the exchange rate you usually see on Google, with no hidden markups or fees. Learn more about exchange rates: https://wise.com/th/mid-market-rate.
Receiving and holding money
You won’t be able to withdraw money from Wise in currencies other than Thai baht to a bank account in another country. If you receive money in a currency other than Thai baht, we’ll automatically convert and add it to your THB. Conversion fees apply.
You will however be able to add money to Wise directly from your Thai bank (or overseas bank), and convert and hold it in over 40 different currencies.
Using your money and Wise card
You won’t be able to withdraw cash at ATMs in Thailand. You can still use your Wise card for local spending and can still withdraw cash from ATMs abroad.
You’ll be able to order a physical or digital Wise card to spend online, in-store and abroad without hidden fees or inflated exchange rates. Plus, you can scan ThaiQR or PromptPay QR codes using your Wise app to pay individuals and businesses.
Interest and Stocks
We can no longer offer Interest and Stocks in Thailand. We’ll sell any units you hold and add the settlement proceeds to your Wise account as cash. This may trigger tax liability, so please consult your tax advisor to understand your obligations.

What happens next
From June 2026, we’ll ask you to provide a few additional documents to meet Thai regulatory requirements. We’ll send you instructions closer to the date. Until then, you can continue using your Wise account as usual.
By continuing to use Wise on or after 3 August 2026, you confirm that you accept the updated Customer Agreement. If you don’t agree, you can choose to close your Wise account or stop using the affected services before 3 August 2026.

Re: WISE anounces changes coming in June
It is my understanding that this applies only to those who created a Wise (virtual) account using Thailand as their residence (Thai address). It also appears to relate primarily to transferring money from one bank outside of Thailand to another bank outside of Thailand via a Thai created Wise account. For those Thai created Wise accounts and the holder uses it primarily for transferring funds from their home country to their Thai bank account, it appears to have no real effect since those funds would be received in Thai baht anyway. If they use the Wise Card (debit type card), then they would not be able to use the ATM's in Thailand to withdraw money.
If anyone who has a Wise account and does not receive such notification, then they will most likely not be affected at all by this change. Also, if they created a Wise account using their home country address, there will be no change and they will not receive these notifications.
For those that transfer money into Thailand from their home country financial institution to their Thai bank account, as I do, nothing changes as it does not involve a Wise Account.

Hi 2lz2p,
Thanks for your great analysis and summary.
What would be your opinion on the following:
-- my Wise account was created in the EU prior to me moving to Thailand,
-- consequently, my address continues to be in the EU,
-- however, when my last Wise debit card expired I asked for its replacement (new card) to be shipped to my address in Thailand, instead of it being sent to my address in the EU, for convenience purposes.
Wise now has my Thailand address on record as my ship-to record.
Do you think that this will have a negative impact on me?
I guess that I will find out in June - August later this year.
Thanks.

Why would it? If you are worried about it, send an inquiry to WISE. They respond very quickly.BKKDreamer wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2026 12:51 pm Do you think that this will have a negative impact on me?

Re: WISE anounces changes coming in June
As I worked in banking and international payments for many years in my working career - I don't want to make the above suggested query with WISE, because it may trigger an unwelcome KYC audit on me - which I do not want.Gaybutton wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2026 1:24 pmWhy would it? Consequently, I will wait to see if I get the letter (in June - August) or not. If I don't get the letter than all is ok with my KYC status. If I get the letter than I will become a very unhappy WISE customer as the new regs and T&C are not what I originally signed up for and defeat the reasons as to why I originally became a WISE customer, perhaps 6 years ago.

Cal from the Youtube channel = @thebangkokguide
posted the below video where he interviews Carl Turner from Expat Tax Thailand regarding the impending WISE changes.
I found it interesting and hopefully you do also.

Re: WISE anounces changes coming in June
Let's break this down into 3 use cases:
1 Using Wise to transfer money from their home country to Thailand, no effective change, nothing to worry about ? I'd imagine that's most of us.
2 People who live in Thailand and use Wise to transfer money from their home country to a third country. I'm not quite sure about that.
3 Anyone who lives in Thailand with a Wise multi-currency account might find the money remitted to Thailand. The obvious answer is to move that money away from Wise.
He actually talks about people holding stocks in a Wise account. I wasn't even aware they offered that.
I just use Wise for transferring money from A to B.
The last time I looked, their multi-currency accounts were nowhere near attractive enough for me to open one, although that was years ago.
[I'm still not resident in Thailand, but like to keep an eye on changes. Particularly as I'd like to spend more time in Thailand]

I don't know how much closer to June it can get, considering I am writing this post on May 31. I have not seen any instructions yet. Have you?WISE wrote:From June 2026, we’ll ask you to provide a few additional documents to meet Thai regulatory requirements. We’ll send you instructions closer to the date.

Re: WISE anounces changes coming in June
It is most likely that only those whose Wise Account was established in Thailand will receive any notice of a need for additional documents. For those who created their Wise account using their home country, they will most likely not see any notices at all.Gaybutton wrote: ↑Sun May 31, 2026 10:44 amI don't know how much closer to June it can get, considering I am writing this post on May 31. As GB mentions, if anyone does receive notices, please let the Board know (also whether your Wise account is based in Thailand or your home country).

Re: WISE anounces changes coming in June
I guess that's me. I was living in Thailand when I established my WISE account, but it is an American based account. When I first turned to WISE it was because my pension direct deposits went through Bangkok Bank's New York branch. Bangkok Bank started requiring additional information that needed to be supplied by the pension source. They refused to do it, so I had to try to find an alternate method. That is when I found out about WISE (Transferwise back then). As a matter of fact, 2lz2p, if I remember correctly I think it was you who first told me about WISE back in 2018. WISE supplied Bangkok Bank with whatever it was they required, and I have been using WISE to receive my pension deposits ever since.
With American Social Security, they do include whatever Bangkok Bank needs, so I still receive my Social Security direct deposits via Bangkok Bank's New York Branch. I never bothered to switch that over to WISE despite the fact I could get a better exchange rate with WISE. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to making the switch.
Thank you, 2lz2p, for making me aware of WISE in the first place and I also appreciate the explanation as to why I have not seen instructions. Good. I guess that means I won't have to do a thing - and when it comes to having to comply with online instructions, doing nothing is my favorite thing to do . . .
