I don't understand why any ship other than military would go anywhere near there while this is going on, but there it is.

Thai Cargo Ship Attacked in Strait of Hormuz Amid Iranian Threats to Maritime Traffic
by Adam Judd
March 11, 2026
In an escalation of tensions in the Middle East, a Thai-registered cargo ship was struck by an unidentified projectile while attempting to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in a fire onboard and the evacuation of its crew. The incident, which occurred earlier today, has been linked say regional analysts to ongoing threats from Iran to restrict passage through this critical waterway, according to reports from multiple Thai media outlets.
The vessel, identified as the “Mayruree Naree,” a 19,891 gross ton dry cargo ship owned by Precious Shipping Public Company Limited (PSL), was en route from a port in the United Arab Emirates when it was hit at approximately 11:00 a.m. Thai time. The attack caused an explosion at the stern, igniting a fire in the engine room and forcing the 23 crew members, mostly Thai nationals, to abandon ship. Initial reports from the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) described the projectile as an “unknown object,” but the timing aligns with Iran’s repeated warnings to “burn any ship” trying to pass through the strait amid the broader regional conflict.
Thai authorities swiftly responded to the crisis. The Marine Department, under Director-General Kritphet Chaichuay, confirmed that 20 crew members were rescued and safely brought ashore in Oman, with efforts ongoing to locate and assist the remaining three, who were later reported to be onboard but safe. The Royal Thai Navy, through its spokesperson Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachai, coordinated international aid via the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) and the Thai Embassy in Muscat to ensure the crew’s safety. No fatalities have been reported, though the ship sustained significant damage, rendering it uncontrollable.
This attack is part of a series of incidents in the region today, with UKMTO noting three commercial vessels targeted within hours in the Strait of Hormuz and the Arabian Gulf. The assaults come following heightened hostilities that began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February. Iranian officials have not directly claimed responsibility for the strike on the Thai ship, but state media and military statements have explained Tehran’s intent to enforce a de facto blockade. Iranian authorities have threatened to close the strait, a vital chokepoint for global oil and goods transport, and respond aggressively to any vessels defying the restrictions.
The Strait of Hormuz, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, handles about one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments. Its closure or disruption could spike global energy prices and disrupt supply chains, with Thai economists warning of potential impacts on the kingdom’s GDP growth if the conflict prolongs. Shipping giants like Maersk have already highlighted risks, estimating a 15-20% rise in freight costs due to the threats.
Precious Shipping, the Bangkok-based owner of the Mayruree Naree, issued a statement confirming the incident and prioritizing crew welfare. The company is working with insurers and authorities to assess the damage and investigate the attack’s origins.
As investigations continue, the Thai government has urged calm and is monitoring the situation closely. Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa stated that Thailand remains neutral in the Middle East conflict but will protect its nationals and interests abroad.

Those 3 crew members are alive and still onboard the ship. Fortunately all of the ship's crew have been confirmed alive.

3 Thai crew on attacked ship ‘still alive’
Rescue vessels still unable to reach Mayuree Naree because of risk of Iranian fire
March 14, 2025
Three Thai sailors remain alive aboard the damaged cargo ship MV Mayuree Naree after it was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Adm Thadawut Thatphithakkul, chief of staff of the Royal Thai Navy.
The vessel caught fire after being struck on Wednesday while sailing near waters off Oman. The blaze was later extinguished.
Twenty crew members were rescued from the ship and brought ashore to the Omani port city of Khasab, where they are being cared for while awaiting repatriation. The remaining three sailors are still on board the vessel. According to the ship’s owner, they are alive, Adm Thadawut said on Friday.
“Rescue vessels have not yet been able to reach them because Iranian forces may fire at ships in the area, making it too dangerous for recovery teams to approach,” he said. Authorities are continuing to check whether the three sailors have sustained injuries, but confirmed there have been no fatalities.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said confirmation of the survivors must come from the government of Oman.
Rear Adm Parach Rattanachaiyaphan, spokesman for the Royal Thai Navy, said Thai authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating assistance for all 23 crew members through diplomatic channels and naval cooperation.
He noted the navy’s role is mainly coordination, as primary responsibility for assisting Thai nationals abroad lies with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At a briefing at Government House, Kritpetch Chaichuay, director-general of the Marine Department, said there are currently no Thai-flagged vessels operating in the Arabian Gulf.
Two vessels owned by Thai business interests but registered in Singapore remain safely docked in the United Arab Emirates, carrying a total of 36 Thai sailors along with other foreign crew members.
“These 36 sailors are safe in the UAE,” Mr Kritpech said.
The rescued sailors from the Mayuree Naree were expected to travel by road from Khasab to Muscat International Airport before flying back to Thailand. The Thai embassy in Muscat has already issued emergency passports to facilitate their departure.
Meanwhile, the vessel’s owner, Precious Shipping Plc, confirmed the ship had complied with all maritime security protocols before the attack.
Precious Shipping expressed gratitude to the Royal Navy of Oman for assisting in the rescue of the 20 sailors and providing temporary shelter.
The company said its top priority remains the safe recovery of the three crew members still aboard the vessel and the prompt return of those already rescued.

Re: USA-Israel attack on Iran - Thai cargo ship attacked by Iran
This was meant as humor? Really? Where's the part where we're supposed to laugh?

Bad joke about stricken Thai ship backfires on Iran
Embassy in South Africa deletes post, issues apology after outrage in Thailand
March 13, 2026
The Iranian embassy in South Africa has removed a social‑media post about Thai seafarers rescued after their ship was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz, saying it was meant as humour and not to offend Thai people, following angry backlash in Thailand.
The mission’s official account on X on Friday shared an image of a Thai crewman in a rescue boat, with smoke seen from the stern of the Thai‑flagged bulk carrier Mayuree Naree behind him.

The caption likened the situation to a child afraid to return home after “crashing the car”.
“When you crash the car and are too scared to go home because of your dad … Strait of Hormuz,” the now-deleted post said.
A furious response quickly followed in Thailand, where three of the 23 Thai crew members from the MV Mayuree Naree remain missing after it was struck by two Iranian missiles on Wednesday.
The embassy subsequently posted an explanation and then took down both posts.
In its clarification, the embassy said the intention was to underscore Iran’s warning about transiting the Strait of Hormuz without coordination, adding that the post was meant as humour and was not targeted at any nationality.
“The lives of the three missing Thais are as precious and respected as the lives of more than 1,500 Iranian civilians who have been killed under the US and Israeli military aggression,” said a statement issued in the name of the Iranian embassies in both Pretoria and Bangkok.
“What was meant in that post was the necessity of respecting Iran’s warning not to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.”
The MV Mayuree Naree, operated by SET‑listed Precious Shipping, was struck by projectiles north of Oman, igniting a fire that forced 20 Thai crew to abandon ship; three others have yet to be located and were believed to be trapped in the ship’s engine room, the company has said.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps later said its forces were responsible and reiterated that vessels should seek Iranian permission before passing the chokepoint.

Quite a few were in the gulf when this started. So if they don't move, Iran can still attack them any time they like.
As appears to be happening with some.

Re: USA-Israel attack on Iran - Mojtaba Khamenei severely injured, flown to Russia - maybe
As of the time of this post I have not seen anything about this on any other news sources, so no verification of this yet. Nevertheless, here is the article. Make of it what you will.

'Lost one leg': Iran's new leader Mojtaba Khamenei secretly flown to Russia for surgery, says report
by Tarun Mishra
March 16, 2026
The "Fog of War" surrounding Iran's newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is finally lifting, and the reality exposes a deeply vulnerable regime.
1. The Airstrike Injuries
While Iranian state media initially tried to project an image of invulnerability, diplomatic leaks have confirmed the new Supreme Leader was caught in the crossfire. Iran’s ambassador to Cyprus, Alireza Salarian, confirmed to The Guardian that Mojtaba sustained injuries in the February 28 bombardment, stating, "I have heard that he was injured in his legs and hand and arm... I think he is in the hospital because he is injured."
2. The Digital Cover-Up
Because Mojtaba is physically unable to appear on camera, Tehran is running a massive digital cover-up. When his first official "statement" as Supreme Leader was released, it was merely a written text read by a news anchor, with zero audio or video. Furthermore, digital investigators at BBC Verify discovered that the "new" official profile picture of Mojtaba heavily promoted by state media is actually an old photo that was artificially manipulated and scrubbed using AI to make it look recent.
3. The Secret Russian Evacuation Leak
Treating a highly valuable, immobilized target in an active war zone where Israeli intelligence (Mossad) has deep penetration is a massive security risk. According to an explosive report from the prominent Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida, Mojtaba has been secretly evacuated from Tehran. The intelligence report claims he was transported to Moscow on a highly secure Russian military aircraft for specialized medical treatment.
4. Putin’s Ultimate Shield
This isn't just a medical evacuation; it is a massive geopolitical power play. The Al-Jarida report notes that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally offered the asylum and treatment during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. By physically harboring the incapacitated Iranian leader inside a Russian presidential compound, Putin has effectively placed Mojtaba under the Kremlin's nuclear umbrella, making any further US or Israeli assassination attempts virtually impossible.
5. Washington's Public Mockery
The US government is actively weaponizing Mojtaba's disappearance. In a recent radio interview, President Donald Trump bluntly questioned the Supreme Leader's status, stating, "I think he is damaged, but I think he's probably alive in some form." US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took it a step further in a press briefing, officially stating that US intelligence knows the leader is “wounded and likely disfigured.”
6. A Decapitated War Machine
The geopolitical implications of this absence are massive. The US and Israel are currently fighting a regional war against an "Axis of Resistance" whose brand-new Supreme Leader is completely unseen, relying on AI-generated photos, and allegedly hiding inside a Russian medical facility.
7. Who is Actually Running the War?
With Mojtaba Khamenei physically removed from the daily command structure, intelligence analysts warn that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is now operating autonomously. The war machine has essentially been put on autopilot. This makes the conflict far more dangerous, as regional IRGC commanders are now launching ballistic missiles and conducting strikes on Gulf nations without the strategic oversight of a centralized, functioning head of state.

Re: USA-Israel attack on Iran - Mojtaba Khamenei severely injured, flown to Russia - maybe
Here is an update:
________________
Reports as ofMarch 16, 2026, indicate that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was secretly flown to Russia for urgent medical treatment after being injured in military strikes. These reports suggest he underwent surgery at a private facility linked to one of President Vladimir Putin's residences.
Key Details of the Reported Incident
Cause of Injury: Mojtaba Khamenei was reportedly wounded during the initial wave of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran that began on February 28, 2024, which also resulted in the death of his father, the former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Nature of Injuries: Conflicting reports range from severe leg and abdominal injuries requiring surgery to claims that he may be in a coma or has lost a leg.
Evacuation to Russia: On March 12, 2024, he was allegedly transported to Moscow via a Russian military aircraft following a personal offer of medical assistance from Vladimir Putin to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Current Status: He is reportedly recovering in a highly secure, private medical compound in Russia to protect him from further targeting.
Official Stance and Verifiability
No Official Confirmation: Neither Iranian nor Russian authorities have officially confirmed the evacuation or the extent of his injuries.
Iranian Denials: Iranian officials have pushed back against these claims, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that the leader is in "good health" and "fully managing the situation".
Public Absence: Speculation is fueled by the fact that Mojtaba Khamenei has not made a public appearance in over 16 days since his appointment.
Source of Reports: Most of these details originated from the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida and have been widely cited by international media outlets like WION and The Sun.

I still am finding nothing about this on any news sources I consider reliable, including Al Jazeera. Without reliable confirmation I am treating this as an unfounded rumor. If it is true, we will know soon enough, but I certainly have to wonder why hardly any news sources are so much as even mentioning this. So for now, in my opinion, rumor.

Re: USA-Israel attack on Iran
As far as I know, no further information about Mojtaba Khameini has been published. So, we really don't know for sure whether he is actually in Russia, whether he has been injured and how severely if he was, what his condition might be, or even whether he is dead. It seems obvious that whoever is currently calling the shots in Iran, it is not him.
For the time being we are waiting to see what Trump's and Iran's next moves will be. Israel says they have killed Iran's commander in charge of the Strait of Hormuz.

Re: USA-Israel attack on Iran
According to the news, about 2000 Iranians have been killed so far in this war. Meanwhile, wasn't it around 5 times as many, around 10,000 Iranians killed by their own government when they were protesting?
I don't like this war and I wish it had never started, but since it has, the USA and Israel better win it. Otherwise it will just be more of the same within Iran and who knows what else outside of its borders if the current regime remains in power and still able to operate as before. Among the outcomes I'd like to see is Iran no longer in any kind of control over the Strait of Hormuz and Iran prevented from ever getting its hands on nuclear weapons. I would also like to see Iran rendered incapable of attacking any other country.
I'm not saying Trump was right to start this, but now he and the USA cannot let it end without a satisfactory outcome.

I agree totally. Whatever your views on starting this war, now they have done so, they need to finish the job.Gaybutton wrote: ↑Fri Mar 27, 2026 8:36 pm According to the news, about 2000 Iranians have been killed so far in this war. I'm personally in favour of this war, but ONLY if they finish the job, which means:
(i) Regime change. For a decent regime that respects the rights of the domestic population and does not threaten others. [However, with the exception of WW2, the US has screwed up almost every time]
AND
(ii) Stopping the Iranians supporting terrorist groups
AND
(iii) Ensuring they never get nuclear weapons
I'm not confident.
Incidentally, a good proportion of the 2000 Iranians killed will be the bad guys.
Whereas almost all the people killed by the regime will be those merely wanting freedom. You won't hear left wing press like the BBC mentioning these points.
