Flights cancelled as travel warnings issued after strikes on Iran

by Aleks Phillips, BBC

March 1, 2026

Airlines serving the Middle East cancelled and diverted flights on Saturday after the US and Israel launched deadly strikes against on Iran, including its capital Tehran.

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Wizz Air were among carriers to pare back their schedules to destinations in the Middle East, citing safety concerns.

Iran responded by launching a series of attacks, with Israel and four Gulf Arab countries that host US military bases - Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE - targeted by strikes.

The UK Foreign Office urged British nationals in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to immediately shelter in place following explosions.

US President Donald Trump cited a failure to reach an agreement to limit Iran's nuclear programme and regime change as among the reasons for launching the attack.

Iranian and Israeli airspace were both closed on Saturday, with flight tracking showed international air traffic avoiding the region.

All flights in and out of Dubai International and Al Maktoum International airport in Dubai were suspended on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday evening, the media office for Dubai International said the airport had sustained "minor damage in an incident" and that four members of staff had been injured.

Qatar Airways confirmed the temporary suspension of flights to and from its capital Doha due to the closure of Qatari airspace, later saying operations would resume 19:00 Doha time on Sunday (16:00 GMT).

British Airways cancelled services to Tel Aviv and Bahrain until Wednesday.

Virgin Atlantic cancelled a Heathrow to Dubai flight and warned its flights to India, Saudi Arabia and the Maldives may take longer due to being rerouted.

Wizz Air suspended all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman up until and including next Saturday.

Heathrow, the UK's busiest airport, urged travellers to check with their airline for updates.

Passengers on the 20:00 flight to Doha on Friday returned to Heathrow after it turned back part way through the journey, but this was due to a technical issue with the aircraft and unrelated to the military action.

Sarah Short was due to return from a holiday in Dubai to Heathrow on Saturday.

"We got on the plane and were literally about to taxi when the pilot said: 'We have some bad news - we're not going anywhere'," she told the BBC. "We then sat on the plane on the tarmac for over three hours."

She added: "There's no flights, everything's suspended. BA said there's nothing they can do," she said.

"It's all so volatile, you just don't know what's going to happen next."

The Foreign Office (FCDO) updated its travel advice to warn "against all travel to Israel and Palestine".

British people in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have been told by the UK Foreign Office to immediately shelter in place, while those in Saudi Arabia have been told to "remain indoors in a secure location".

UK nationals in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, and Oman have also been instructed to "remain vigilant" and take shelter if advised to do so.

The FCDO said British nationals in Bahrain, Israel, Palestine, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates could register their presence to receive direct updates on the situation.

John Henry, 71, from Northampton, who is on holiday in Qatar with his family, was at a shopping centre when they got an air raid alert.

"We heard a bit of a thud and felt a tremor, and we saw a number of people moving quickly out of the shopping centre," he told the BBC.

Qatar's defence ministry said it had intercepted Iranian missiles.

"You could see the vapour trails where they had hit," said Henry. "We've heard four or five additional thuds where something must have happened."

The UAE also said it had intercepted Iranian missiles, while footage appears to show the moment a US facility in Bahrain was hit.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer chaired a Cobra meeting on the strikes earlier on Saturday.

A government spokesperson said: "Our immediate priority is the safety of UK nationals in the region and we will provide them with consular assistance."

PM orders evacuation flights for Thais in Mideast

Thais advised to shelter 'in-place', supply of Thai workers suspended

March 1, 2026

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ordered an urgent, round-the-clock operation to evacuate Thais from the war-torn Middle East, with the priority to bring Thais home from Iran, amid fears the conflict could widen.

Mr Anutin, who also serves as interior minister, said in a Facebook post on Sunday that his government was racing to arrange evacuation flights for Thai citizens stranded in Iran and Israel.

While Thailand was not a party to the conflict, tens of thousands of Thai nationals lived and work across the region, making their safety the government’s top priority, Mr Anutin said.

He was working closely with Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and the air force chiefs to ready evacuation flights for Thais in high‑risk areas, beginning with Iran. The Foreign Ministry had established a day‑to‑day operations centre to monitor developments, consolidate information, assess risks and draw up systematic evacuation plans. Security agencies are providing continuous, 24‑hour updates.

Mr Anutin has directed the PM’s Office, Finance, Labour, Public Health, Defence and Interior ministies to mobilise personnel and resources at full capacity to support the evacuation mission.

“The government will do everything possible to ensure our Thai brothers and sisters are safe and can return home as quickly as possible,” he said.

The prime minister acknowledged that the Middle East crisis could send tremors through global and Thai economies. He said the government would accelerate measures to cushion the impact and seek opportunities amid the volatility as the country continues its economic recovery.

Thais advised to take shelter 'in place'

The Foreign Ministry on Sunday issued its third advisory urging Thais residing in the Middle East, particularly in Iran and in high‑risk areas hosting US military bases, to remain calm, stay indoors or in designated shelters, follow local authorities’ instructions, and closely monitor updates from local officials and the Thai embassy.

The ministry also advised Thais to avoid travel to the Middle East until the situation stabilises. Those in need of urgent assistance should contact the nearest Thai embassy or consulate, or call the Consular Affairs Department’s 24‑hour hotline on 0‑2572‑8442.

A situation/war room has been established to closely track the conflict, prepare assistance measures and draw up evacuation plans as required, the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the Labour and Foreign Affairs minstries have agreed to suspend the provision of Thai workers to risk areas in the Middle East.

At present, 77,495 Thai workers are under the supervision of Thai labour offices in Tel Aviv, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, Labour Minister Treenuch Thienthong said.

Anutin calls NSC meeting on Gulf conflict fallout, evacuation plans for Thais in Iran

by THE NATION

March 1, 2026

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul will convene the National Security Council on March 2, 2026 to assess economic and security fallout from the Iran conflict, while ordering evacuation preparedness for Thai nationals, including Air Force and charter-flight options.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Sunday he will convene a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) on Monday to discuss possible fallout from the ongoing fighting involving Iran and allied forces of the United States and Israel.

He said the meeting will be held at 10.00am on March 2, 2026, with coordination expected across government agencies and private-sector stakeholders on trade, exports and imports, and price-stabilisation measures aimed at preventing severe impacts on Thai consumers.

NSC meeting to focus on trade, prices and wider impacts

Anutin said Thailand must prepare for potential spillover effects, including pressure on living costs, energy prices and supply chains. He said the NSC meeting would bring together relevant parties to ensure contingency planning is in place, particularly on commerce and pricing measures.

Embassies open operations centres and 24/7 hotlines

He added that Thai diplomatic missions have opened operations centres and are maintaining round-the-clock hotlines to assist Thai nationals in the Middle East who may be affected by the situation.

Evacuation preparations ordered, Air Force on standby

Anutin said he has ordered preparations to assist Thai nationals living in areas affected by the fighting. Speaking at Wing 6, Don Mueang Air Force Base, he said relevant agencies—including security authorities and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—briefed him on Saturday night about strikes by US and Israeli forces against Iran.

He said the government has coordinated with the Royal Thai Air Force and held discussions with the Air Force commander to prepare aircraft that could be used to support Thai nationals—especially in Iran—and to identify viable routes to bring people home.

Background: US-Israeli strikes and escalation risks

The conflict intensified on February 28, 2026, when Israel said it launched a pre-emptive attack against Iran, with US military action accompanying the strikes, according to Reuters. Reuters reported the assault was coordinated between the US and Israel and followed months of planning.

Reuters also reported that the strikes targeted a range of Iranian sites and leadership-linked targets, prompting Iranian retaliation across the region and raising fears of wider escalation and disruption to key energy routes.

Air Force aircraft, charter flights and third-country routes

Anutin said aircraft availability should not be a problem, but using Royal Thai Air Force aircraft may require multiple refuelling stops. Authorities are therefore also considering alternatives such as charter flights to bring Thai nationals back as quickly as possible.

He added that where airspace closures prevent direct travel, officials will reassess options, including evacuating Thai nationals to a third country before arranging their return to Thailand.

“Ready at all times” to bring people home

Anutin said the crucial factor is access to destination countries and how quickly Thailand can operate safely. He said several Air Force aircraft have already been readied, and the government is coordinating with the Foreign Ministry and the Transport Ministry to explore the most effective flight arrangements, including whether direct flights can be arranged under government flight permissions.

He said the Thai government will pursue every possible option to ensure Thai nationals are kept as safe as possible and will bring them home if they wish to return.

Economic contingency planning assigned to Finance Minister

Asked about economic preparedness, Anutin said he has assigned Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, to prepare for all scenarios, as Thailand would inevitably face impacts on the cost of living, oil prices and other energy costs. The government, he said, must find ways to minimise the impact on the public.

Over 70,000 Thais reported in Iran and Dubai

Anutin said the Ministry of Labour reported Thai nationals in Iran and Dubai totalling more than 70,000, including around 7,700 in Iran. He urged the public to follow further details from the relevant ministries.

Advice for Thai nationals who choose to stay

Asked what he would like to say to Thais who do not want to return at this time, Anutin said countries have measures to protect citizens and foreign nationals. He urged Thai nationals to closely monitor updates and strictly follow official guidance from Thai authorities and local officials.

Oil prices surge on Middle East crisis; Thailand warns of possible sharp pump hike by March 4

by THE NATION

March 1, 2026

Energy officials say escalating Middle East tensions are driving global oil prices higher and could trigger a sharp rise in Thailand’s domestic fuel prices around March 4 unless the situation eases, as agencies check stockpiles and monitor shipments via Hormuz and the Red Sea.

Thailand may face a sharp rise in domestic fuel prices—especially around March 4, 2026—as global oil prices surge amid an escalating Middle East crisis, according to a source at the Energy Ministry.

The source said authorities are checking national stockpiles and closely monitoring oil shipments through key maritime routes to manage supply risks, but warned that Thailand’s retail prices remain tied to global market movements.
Global oil prices jump, diesel seen testing $100 a barrel

The source said energy markets and the global economy were jolted by reports linked to the conflict, pushing global oil prices up rapidly. Diesel could break US$100 a barrel, after closing at around US$92 a barrel on Friday, February 28, 2026, the source said.

“The accelerating trajectory of global oil prices will inevitably affect retail prices in Thailand because we are tied to global market mechanisms. It will also worsen the global economic outlook through higher energy costs and rising prices of goods,” the source said.
March 4 highlighted as “risk point” for Thai pump prices

The source assessed that domestic retail prices on Monday, March 2, 2026 may not rise significantly, as they are referenced to global market prices from the previous trading day. With Tuesday, March 3, 2026 a public holiday, an immediate adjustment is also unlikely.

However, Wednesday, March 4, 2026 was flagged as a key “risk point”. If global negotiations do not ease tensions, domestic oil prices could rise sharply in line with global markets, the source said.

Agencies check stockpiles and track shipments via Hormuz and Red Sea

Relevant energy agencies, including the Department of Energy Business and the Energy Policy and Planning Office, are assessing Thailand’s energy security by urgently checking remaining oil stock levels to determine how many days of demand can be covered.

They are also monitoring tankers travelling through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, which are strategic routes for global energy trade, to see whether deliveries are being delayed or disrupted.

Initial assessments will focus on whether reserves can cover domestic demand for the coming months—such as two to three months, or around 61 days—to cushion potentially prolonged volatility.

Warning: escalation could worsen energy and economic risks

The source said the most critical condition is that the situation must not broaden or draw in additional countries, as that would increase risks to energy stability and the global economy.

Mideast war affects 54 flights at major Thai airports

March 1, 2026

The war in the Middle East has affected 54 flights at Suvarnabhumi and Phuket airports since Saturday, primarily airlines based in the conflict region.

Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) said on Sunday that the Mideast situation affected 32 flights, 16 inbound and 16 outbound, operated by nine airlines from Saturday to Sunday morning.

They were operated by El Al Israel Airlines, Air Arabia, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Gulf Air, Arkia Israel Inland Airlines, Kuwait Airways and World2Fly, a Spanish charter airline.

Staff at Suvarnabhumi airport offered assistance to affected travellers on the second floor of the passenger terminal near Gate 1 and Gate 10. The airlines provided them with accommodation. No outbound travellers were stranded there, AoT said.

The management of Phuket airport said 22 flights were affected, 11 incoming and 11 outbound. They were operated by Qatar Airways, Etihad Airways, Air Arabia and Unicair, a private air ambulance service.

On Saturday flight ETD 417 of Etihad Airways left Phuket airport for Abu Dhabi at 3.30pm and returned to Phuket at 8.30pm on Saturday for passenger safety, Phuket airport authorities said.

The aspects of this I believe are most likely to affect farang in Thailand include flight delays and cancellations, expected fuel price increases (Thailand says it currently has a 2 month supply of fuel), and possible exchange rate issues.

Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand Issues Advisory Amid Middle East Airspace Closures

By Goong Nang Suksawat

March 1, 2026

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has issued an urgent advisory due to military tensions between Israel and Iran. In response to recent airstrikes and missile operations, several Middle Eastern countries have closed or restricted their airspace to protect civil aviation.

The Israeli government has officially suspended all civil flight operations and advised the public to avoid domestic airports until further notice. Similarly, Iranian authorities have closed the national airspace as a security measure. These restrictions have expanded to include several other countries in the region that are reducing or closing air corridors as the conflict escalates.

The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait have implemented partial airspace closures as a precaution. These measures are expected to affect major international flight paths between Europe, Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region.

As a result, many airlines are rerouting flights to avoid high-risk areas, which may cause delays or cancellations on international routes through the Middle East. Passengers traveling to Europe, the Middle East, or with regional connections should monitor airline updates and confirm their flight status before going to the airport.

CAAT reminds passengers departing from Thailand that Thai civil aviation regulations protect them in cases of flight delays or cancellations. However, transit countries may not provide the same legal protections. Claims or complaints can be submitted at complaint.caat.or.th. CAAT is coordinating with safety agencies and airlines to monitor the situation and will issue further updates as needed.

The preceding is a press release from the Thai Government PR Department.

I'd imagine Thailand will be seeing a drop in incoming tourist numbers. With the nutters in Iran attacking middle eastern airports, clearly they cannot operate flights.
On Twitter, Emirates say flights are cancelled until 15:00 today (UAE time). It was the same yesterday and they updated the announcement just 3 hours before expiry. Allowing for travel time to airports, that's unreasonable.
Fortunately, I don't travel until later in the month and also won't be flying via the middle East

This time, I hope the politicians finish the job and take out the Iranian regime. They have been causing trouble for far too long.

Special help for stranded foreign tourists

Daily allowance, fees waived, discount packages

March 2, 2026

The Tourism and Sports Ministry is working on accommodation and tour discounts for visitors stranded in Thailand by the latest Middle East war, and immigration police will waive overstay fines and extend visas.

They will also be eligible for a 2,000 baht daily allowance.

Tourism permanent secretary Natthriya Thaweevong said discounts and fee waivers were being organised in talks with hoteliers, tour guides and related services. She expected their cooperation.

She said some tourists who were due to depart could not do so because of flight cancellations. They should receive assistance because they had already been in Thailand for a while and wanted to leave.

“We should be a good host and take care of them. The tourism ministry is asking hoteliers and service providers, through their associations, if they can offer accommodation discounts and tour packages with special prizes,” Ms Natthriya said.

Local tourism officials and volunteers would interview affected visitors at their hotels to ascertain their needs, so that officials could help. This would include help for visitors whose visas were about to expire.

“In bad times we take care of them, so that they know that we take good care of every visitor until they return home,” she said.

Initially the Ministry of Tourism and Sports would pay 2,000 baht as daily compensation to each visitor stranded in Thailand by the Iran war, Ms Natthriya said.

Pol Maj Gen Choengron Rimpadee, deputy immigration police chief, said fines will be waived for visitors who overstay their visas because of the war and have decided to go somewhere else.

Stranded visitors who decide to extend their stay in Thailand would be able to renew their visas for 30 days at a time, but they would need certification from their embassies, Pol Maj Gen Choengron said.

PM Anutin Pledges ‘Thailand First’ Strategy to Shield Kingdom from Middle East Fallout

Government orders emergency evacuation of 270 citizens from Iran, freezes fuel prices, and threatens oil export ban to ensure domestic energy security.

by THE NATION

March 3, 2026

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has unveiled a comprehensive "Thailand First" crisis management strategy following an emergency meeting with regional ambassadors on Tuesday.

The policy aims to insulate the Thai economy and its citizens from the escalating volatility in the Middle East.

Key measures announced by the Prime Minister include strict price controls on essential goods, the immediate evacuation of Thai nationals from Iran, and a potential embargo on petroleum exports to safeguard domestic energy reserves.

Energy Security and Export Restrictions

Addressing concerns over global oil spikes, the Prime Minister assured the public that Thailand maintains sufficient fuel reserves.

He noted that while Thailand possesses a refining capacity of 170 million litres per day, domestic consumption stands at only 130 million litres.

The Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Energy have been formally instructed to freeze prices on fuel and essential consumer goods to mitigate the rising cost of living.

Emergency Evacuations from Iran

The Prime Minister identified Iran as the primary "zone of concern," where approximately 270 Thai nationals, including government officials, are currently stationed. A resolution has been passed for their immediate repatriation.

Diplomatic efforts are being ramped up to secure "Exit Visas" for the group amidst the logistical challenges of a conflict zone. The government has prepared multiple contingencies for the evacuation:

Air Support: A single chartered flight capable of carrying the entire group, or a fleet of five to six Royal Thai Air Force aircraft, is on standby.

Land Routes: Should regional airspace be closed, the government will facilitate land transport to aviation hubs in neighbouring countries, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for direct flights to Bangkok.
