Grindr Account Hacked

Post by Jun »

My Grindr account was hacked by someone thousands of miles away. They sent loads of spam messages. They did not change the password, so I eventually did that.

Then, 6 days later, Grindr suspended my account. No wonder there's a spam problem if they take 6 days to take such action. I had already e-mailed their helpdesk regarding the hacking, but did not get a reply.

I have appealed. However, I'm expecting neither a quick nor a sensible response.

I'm currently in a location where Grindr is one of the more popular apps. As long as the boy I plan to meet shows up, I won't be needing Grindr for a while.

Here's a timeline ( approximately):
Account hacked: 30 Jan
I change password: 31 Jan
I contact Grindr helpdesk: 31 Jan
Grindr block my account: 6 Feb
I appeal: 6 Feb

Still waiting for a response.

You will note that Grindr failed to prevent the hacker sending a few hundred spam messages and took about 6~7 days to block the account.
They haven't responded to my appeal. The evidence of hacking ought to be reasonably clear, since the hacker was over 12,000 km away, I changed the password and I contacted Grindr several days before the ban.

What you might do while waiting for Grindr to correct the situation, and who knows how long that might take, is go to Grindr via a VPN and create a new account. Better than not being able to get in at all or send and receive messages.

Well, according to what I have read, I'd also need a new phone or factory reset, a different e-mail and different pictures.

The new phone or factory reset being the bigger hurdle. Too much expense or effort for Grindr.

It seems that although Grindr are so slow that hackers could send hundreds or thousands of spam messages before being banned, once banned, they do make it quite difficult for regular users to circumvent a ban.

This is not the link I originally read, but contains the factory reset info.

I agree it's not worth going through all that for Grindr. And in my opinion Grindr isn't all that great in the first place. For me Grindr is the last choice when I am searching available boys. Too few profiles available on their free version and too much on their part to try to get you to pay for a membership, which I think is very overpriced. Not me, especially since they have been unresponsive to your problem.

If Grindr ever gets around to resolving your problem, that's one thing. In the meantime there is still Hornet, Romeo, Jackd, HeeSay, and others. There are probably gay chat rooms too, although I haven't tried any of those for several years. I don't remember the name of the one I used, but it seemed quite popular. Maybe someone can remind me of the name - if it still exists.

I don't hold out much hope with Grindr, as I think the company is very badly managed.

A few years back, I actually e-mailed senior management about all the spam on the platform. Their reply was full of excuses about why it's impossible to fix.
I had to remind them that every other platform I use has the problem under control.
A spam related issue appears to still be number 1 on their customer feedback list.

In my case, a hacker got into my account and was sending spam. It took them 6 days to act. Easy to see why they have spam.

On the other hand, I quite like the quality of boys on Grindr in Jomtien and South Pattaya. Also, some of the boys only use one app.

Grindr is my least favorite app (Hornet favorite, HeeSay second).

That gay chatroom was camfrog? I used it in 2011-14, but then there was a decline.

Thank you christianpfc. Yes, that was it. You have a much better memory than I have. I also don't remember why I stopped using it, but probably, as you pointed out, it lost popularity and I don't recall ever getting much of anything out of it. If I had, I'm sure I would have remembered it. Maybe I will give it another try.

Still no response from Grindr. I am not surprised.

Is it a paid account? If it is, they have no excuse for apparently ignoring you, blocking you, and providing no means of restoring your account.
