No signs of Nipah found in arrivals from risk areas
Thai officials stress disease is not easily transmissible but airport screening continues

Screening at three major Thai airports has still detected no potential cases of Nipah virus among arrivals from Bangladesh and India, while the acting public health minister confirms that the disease is not easily transmissible.
Pattana Promphat said on Tuesday that health officials started thermal screening at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and Phuket airports on Saturday as flights from the South Asian countries landed there.
About 1,700 people arriving from the countries have been screened so far with negative results. Nearly 700 people arrive daily at the three airports from Kolkata in West Bengal state of India, where the virus was detected earlier this month.
Mr Pattana said that screening at the airports would continue. However, people should not panic because the virus is not transmitted during its incubation period, he said.
“The transmission of Nipah virus is not like that of Covid-19. Even though they may be asymptomatic, Covid-infected people can transmit the virus. For Nipah, infected people will not transmit it as long as they do not have any symptoms,” he said.
Health authorities have earlier stressed that unlike Covid, Nipah virus is not airborne but can be transmitted through contact with bodily fluids.
“If there is a suspected case at an airport, the person will be quarantined and the results of a relevant test will be known in eight hours,” the health minister said.
He asked Thai people who have returned from Kolkata to monitor their health, and contact medical personnel if they have cold-like symptoms.
Nipah virus was first discovered in Malaysia in 1998 and there have been small outbreaks in Bangladesh and India. Thailand has never found a Nipah virus case, the health minister said.
