Aren't you impressed with the way Thailand is succeeding in attracting high quality tourists?

The locals are quite capable of getting in a brawl too. When I see fights, it's usually Thais.

That sounds like you see a lot of fights. In all my years living in Thailand, do you know how many physical fights I have actually witnessed - Thai or foreigner? One - and that was in Bangkok.

I think I see one every 2~3 years.
I've already seen one this time, at around 10~11 pm near the Dongtan beach sign. Involving locals, not tourists.

Be that as it may, it does not excuse the behavior of these "high quality" tourists - and there are likely more such incidents that don't make it into the news - and I usually don't post about these incidents even when they do appear in the news - which is very often.

Stating that Thais also get into fights reminds me of children trying to get out of trouble by saying "He did it too."

British Tourist Arrested After Allegedly Punching Bolt Taxi Driver in Pattaya Over Payment Dispute

December 31, 2025

A 35-year-old British tourist was detained by police in Pattaya early on Tuesday morning after allegedly assaulting a Thai motorcycle taxi driver who refused his ride request due to a payment method disagreement.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:36 a.m. in front of Walking Street in South Pattaya.

Rescue teams from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation responded to reports of an assault and found the victim, 26-year-old Phummin Prommanot, a ride-hailing driver for the Bolt app, suffering from a torn laceration under his lower lip. He received initial first aid at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

Police and Pattaya special affairs officers quickly apprehended the suspect at the scene, identified as Mr. Sweeney, a 35-year-old British national from Nottingham. Both parties were later taken to Pattaya City Police Station for questioning. Witnesses noted that Sweeney was not wearing a shirt, despite the hour and apparently on a night out.

According to Phummin’s statement to authorities, Sweeney had attempted to book a ride through the Bolt application. The driver declined the request because the passenger insisted on paying by credit card, which Phummin said he could not accept. He apologized multiple times, but Sweeney reportedly became enraged, punched him in the face, and then attempted to flee. Good Samaritans nearby helped detain the suspect until police arrived.

Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to establish the full sequence of events and ensure a fair investigation. The British tourist is being held in custody as police prepare to pursue assault charges under Thai law. The British man did not immediately release a statement giving his version of events to media.
