Cambodian attacks injure Thai soldiers, prompt border evacuations

December 7, 2025

The Second Army Region has ordered evacuations from border communities in four northeastern provinces after a 35-minute armed clash with Cambodian forces in Si Sa Ket province on Sunday, during which two Thai soldiers were injured.

The evacuation order, issued on Sunday afternoon, covers areas along the frontier in Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani. Authorities cited “current uncertainty and the possibility that the clashes may escalate,” urging residents to move to designated shelters.

According to the army, Cambodian troops opened fire in the Phu Pha Lek-Phlan Hin Paet Kon area at 2.15pm. Two Thai soldiers were hit, prompting Thai forces to return fire. Cambodian troops later fired recoilless rifles, the statement said.

The exchange ended at 2.50pm. Sgt Anuchart Rueankham was shot in the leg, while Pvt Pornchai Champachum sustained chest bruising and pain after a round struck his bullet-proof vest.

The Second Army Region said Thai troops “returned fire proportionally and strictly in accordance with the Rules of Engagement”. Security agencies are monitoring the situation and advised local residents to remain sheltered.

The clash comes shortly after Thailand urged the United Nations to investigate Cambodia's widespread use of landmines inside Thai territory along the border, which has resulted in injuries to several Thai soldiers and a Chinese civilian.

Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Opening Fire on Soldiers in Newest Border Clash

By Adam Judd

December 8, 2025

Thailand’s Ministry of Defence has sharply condemned Cambodia after Cambodian troops allegedly opened fire on Thai soldiers conducting routine road maintenance along a disputed section of the border in Si Sa Ket province on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 14:15 near Phu Pha Lek and Phlan Hin Paet Kon in the Kantharalak district. According to the Thai ministry, a Royal Thai Army engineering unit was improving a dirt track between Phu Pha Lek and the Phieng Fa checkpoint when Cambodian forces initiated gunfire.

Two Thai soldiers were wounded: one sustained a gunshot to the leg, while the second was hit in the chest plate of his body armor, resulting in bruising and difficulty breathing. Both were evacuated to Kantharalak Hospital and are now in stable condition.

Thai authorities stated that Cambodian troops then fired a recoilless rifle round into Thai territory. Thai soldiers returned fire in accordance with rules of engagement and the principle of proportionality. The exchange lasted until approximately 14:50, after which the situation de-escalated.

Hours later, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Tea Seiha, claimed on social media that Thai forces had fired first and that Cambodian troops did not retaliate. Thailand’s Ministry of Defence categorically rejected the assertion, calling it “untrue and irresponsible,” and pointed to the injuries suffered by Thai personnel as clear evidence that Cambodian forces initiated the attack.

The ministry further accused Cambodia of deliberately escalating tensions, citing a pattern of recent provocations along the border and stating that the incident amounted to intentional targeting of Thai troops.

Thai military officials say forces along the frontier remain on high alert while diplomatic channels work to prevent further escalation.

Clash near Phu Pha Lek–Phlan Hin Paet Kon leaves two Thai soldiers wounded

by THE NATION

December 7, 2025

The Second Army Area said on its Facebook page that Cambodian forces opened fire first, prompting Thai troops to return fire. The exchange escalated when Cambodian forces deployed recoilless rifles.

The clash ended at around 2.50pm, though Thai units remain on heightened alert.

Authorities warned that the situation remains unstable and could escalate. Residents in border districts of four provinces—Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani—were advised to evacuate to designated shelters under the civilian evacuation plan.

The Second Army Area released the following timeline:

* 2.15pm: A unit from the 13th Infantry Battalion (1st Company) came under small-arms fire. Two soldiers were injured: Sgt Anuchart Rueankham, who was shot in the leg, and Pvt Pornchai Champajum, who was struck in the chest but protected by his ballistic vest, sustaining bruising and chest tightness.

* 2.16pm: Thai forces returned fire in accordance with the Rules of Engagement and remained on high readiness.

* 2.50pm: The exchange of fire ceased. Thai units continued close monitoring of the situation.

* 2.53pm: The injured soldiers were evacuated to Kantharalak Hospital for treatment.

Very upsetting to say the least.

My friends in Kantharalak will almost certainly have to return to shelters. I'm sure they could hear the gunshots from the village in Kantharalak where I used to reside part-time in a previous chapter of my life.

I planned to visit them over the holidays as I do each year - but will have to wait to see which way the bullets are flying.

The authorities are urging non-residents to stay well away and some villages are being evacuated. I don't think you need me to tell you this would be the wrong time to visit, especially since we don't know if this is going to escalate. The military seems to think chances are that it will escalate. Otherwise, why call for evacuations?

Instead, why not have your friends come and visit you?

Unfortunately the situation is rapidly escalating and the situation is serious.

As far as I know, airline flights between Thailand and Cambodia are still in operation, but I would not recommend being on any of them.

PM promises 'necessary military response' to Cambodian attacks

Protection of Thai sovereignty, Thai people paramount, PM says

December 8, 2025

Thailand will launch "all necessary military operations" in response to Cambodia’s latest attacks, which began on Sunday, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said after a top level security meeting on Monday.

Mr Anutin made the promise in the presence of the chiefs of the armed forces and the defence minister on Monday afternoon, after a meeting of the National Security Council at Government House.

He said Thailand had to exercise its right to self defence after Cambodia launched attacks on Thailand on Sunday that continued on Monday.

“The government will respond with military operations to actual situations, and other military operations as necessary,” the prime minister said.

He said the government was confident the Thai armed forces “can carefully undergo operations in accordance with the rules of engagement and humanitarian principles in their efforts to protect people and maintain peace and order along the border”.

The prime minister said his government was most determined to protect Thai sovereignty and territory in compliance with international laws and the right to self defence.

“The government asks the people to rest assured that the protection of the nation and safety of the people is the most important mission of the government and the Thai armed forces,” Mr Anutin said.

The prime minister said violence was never Thailand's preferred option, and Thailand never initiated violence, or launched an invasion.

However, “Thailand will not tolerate the infringement of its sovereignty and will act rationally and carefully and adhere to the principles of peace, security and humanitarianism”.

“The government is ready to take all necessary measures to maintain the security, sovereignty and integrity of the nation and take the best care of people,” Mr Anutin said.

Ongoing Clashes Erupt Along Thai-Cambodian Border, Thai Military Responds, One Thai Soldier Confirmed Killed, F16s in Use

By Adam Judd

December 8, 2025

The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has reported multiple skirmishes along the Thai-Cambodian border, with Thai forces responding in accordance with international rules of engagement while accelerating civilian evacuations from affected areas. The incidents follow a series of attacks initiated by Cambodian troops on December 7th, escalating tensions in disputed frontier zones, stated the Royal Thai Army.

According to a statement from Major General Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the RTA, the clashes intensified early this morning in the Chan An Ma pass in Ubon Ratchathani’s Nam Yuen district. Cambodian soldiers opened fire using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades around 5:05 a.m., with exchanges continuing into the afternoon. Thai troops retaliated proportionally with similar weaponry, adhering to established protocols for border confrontations.

Further violence unfolded around 7:00 a.m. in the nearby Chan Bok pass, also in Nam Yuen district, where Thai personnel came under attack from Cambodian support fire weapons, such as artillery or heavier munitions. The assault resulted in one Thai soldier killed and four others wounded, the army confirmed. Casualty details for Cambodian forces remain unverified at this time.

In a bid to neutralize the threat, Thai air assets have been deployed to strike military targets across several border sectors, aiming to suppress Cambodian heavy weapons fire and prevent further incursions. “Our operations are focused on defense and de-escalation,” Major General Suvaree stated.

The border flare-up stems from yesterday’s Cambodian offensive in the Phu Pha Lek – Plan Hin Paet Kok area of Sisaket province’s Kantharalak district, a historically sensitive region marked by unresolved territorial disputes dating back decades.

Civilian safety remains a top priority amid the unrest. The Second Army Area, including the Suranaree Task Force, and the First Army Area’s Burapha Task Force have mobilized personnel to facilitate evacuations under pre-planned contingencies. Thousands of residents near the border in Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket provinces are being relocated to safer zones, with temporary shelters and aid distributions underway.

Additional updates on the situation, including potential diplomatic developments, will be provided as they emerge. International observers and neighboring countries are closely monitoring the events.

The Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has canceled all his plans for the day and will be leading an emergency security meeting later this morning.

Thai soldiers attack Cambodian troops encroaching on Sa Kaeo

Operation launched 'to reclaim Thai sovereign territory'

December 8, 2025

The Thai army's Burapha Task Force launched attacks on Cambodian troops accused of violating Thai sovereignty in Sa Kaeo province on Monday.

The 1st Army said a military operation was launched "to reclaim Thai sovereign territory along the border in Sa Kaeo province".

No specifics of the operation were released, including the actual location. The army promised a later update.

The task force supervises the Thai-Cambodian border in Sa Kaeo province.

The announcement came only hours after the task force was placed on full alert as Cambodia continued to reinforce troops and weapons deployed on the border with eastern Thailand.

The task force said it had been ordered by 1st Army Region commander Lt Gen Worayos Lueangsuwan to prepare for full combat deployment, as Cambodia continued to build up its forces in the area around the clock.

The attacks that began on Sunday had previously been limited to the provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin and Buri Ram, which adjoins Sa Kaeo.

The situation in Sa Kaeo deteriorated after Thai security forces began a crackdown on Cambodian encroachers in Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaew in Khok Sung district after the first round of the border clashes ended on July 28 with a ceasefire brokered by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and US President Donald Trump signed by the two countries.

The Sa Kaeo Public Health Office on Monday announced the temporary closure of all public services at border district hospitals in the province - Ta Phraya, Khok Sung, Aranyaprather and Khlong Hat - until further notice. The hospitals will accept only emergency cases, it said.

Provincial authorities have ordered people in the four districts to evacuate to emergency shelters for their own safety until the tense situation is resolved.

Rapid evacuation of Thais from Cambodian border as attacks escalate

Army urges tight security at all state offices

December 8, 2025

Thai residents along the border with Cambodia continued to vacate their homes on Monday, moving to safe shelters further inland, after Cambodia resumed armed attacks along the frontier.

The Royal Thai Army on Monday instructed residents of villages in all provinces bordering Cambodia to immediately evacuate to safe shelters.

Roads from the border in Surin, and other border provinces, were reported to be clogged with vehicles taking people to safety.

"Attention everybody. Please prepare your clothes and medications, and keep your ID with you. Other valuables and motorcycles must be stored inside your house and make sure that it is properly locked before you leave," community leaders said in a prepared public announcement in Ban Nong Ya Kaew and Ban Nong Samet in Khok Sung district of Sa Kaeo.

A message broadcast by the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department to mobile phone users along the border warned them of imminent danger if they did not move to safe shelters.

The attacks occurred in four provinces - Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, Surin and Ubon Ratchathani.

The army alerted all state agencies to upgrade security at government offices, warning that state property could be targeted by "the enemy".

Cambodia resumed its attacks on Thai forces on Sunday, and they continued from about 5am on Monday. One Thai soldier was confirmed killed and eight wounded in the two days of clashes, as of late Monday morning.

Thai planes have struck at military targets in retaliation. Cambodian casualties were not known.

So far one Thai soldier has been killed. No word that I can find tells anything about any casualties on the Cambodian forces. Just how much further this all will escalate remains to be seen.

I wish they could amicably settle their disputes. To me, it would make much more sense for Thailand and Cambodia to be allies, not enemies, but obviously it's not going to work out that way, at least not in the foreseeable future. I don't expect many more Cambodian boys to be showing up on the bar scene any time soon.

If anyone is wondering, the conflict is not going on anywhere near Pattaya or Bangkok. It is perfectly safe to travel to Thailand. The areas where this is going on are not areas likely to be visited by many board readers looking for a holiday in Thailand even if everything was peaceful. No need to cancel or postpone holiday trips to Thailand.

Cambodian attacks aimed at deflecting scrutiny over landmine violations: Thai Defence Ministry

December 8, 2025

Cambodia launched attacks on Thailand on Sunday in an attempt to divert international attention from its unacceptable use of landmines on Thai soil, according to the Thai Ministry of Defence.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page on Monday evening, the ministry said evidence gathered by the Asean Observer Team in Thailand clearly showed that Cambodia had violated the Ottawa Convention by planting landmines across the border.

According to the Defence Ministry, the evidence was presented at the 22nd Meeting of States Parties to the Ottawa Convention in Geneva. Cambodia is a signatory to the international treaty banning anti-personnel mines.

According to the ministry, the evidence included mapped locations of newly laid mines on Thai soil, physical traces of recent mine installation, the presence of PMN-2 anti-personnel mines, and patterns consistent with Cambodian military practice. Cambodia, it said, was unable to refute the findings with evidence or reason.

The Defence Ministry said the renewed Cambodian attacks were “attempts to escape the field of facts to the field of emotion”, a tactic it claimed Cambodia often used when facing scrutiny in international forums.

Following the attacks, Cambodia again accused Thailand of aggression, portraying itself as a small and vulnerable country confronted by a stronger neighbour, while appealing for peace and international sympathy, the ministry said.

“This was crafted to create drama and divert attention instead of addressing the issue responsibly and in line with international principles,” the statement said.

And according to the Phnom Penh Post:

"This afternoon of December 8, Thai troops launched an attack on the Cambodian villages of Prey Chan and Chouk Chey, in O Beichoan commune, Ou 'Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, expanding on earlier attacks in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey."

This is the first time I've seen Thai air force fighter jets in use. What could go wrong?

Shorty after announcing that the fighter jets were going to be targeting strategic military targets, they bombed a Cambodian gambling casino...
