Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai met with U.S. Ambassador Robert Godec on Tuesday, expressing Thailand’s hope to welcome U.S. President Donald Trump in the near future. The visit would mark the first by a U.S. president in 13 years, signaling a deepening of the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
During the meeting, Phumtham thanked the United States for its role as a temporary observer in the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border situation, describing it as a constructive step toward regional stability. The discussions show the strong bilateral relationship, with both sides focusing on security, transnational crime, and border management.
Ambassador Godec praised the cooperation between Thailand and the U.S., addressing the centrality of their partnership within ASEAN for both security and economic matters. He also expressed gratitude to Thailand for hosting a recent U.S. Congressional delegation, further strengthening diplomatic ties.
The two leaders welcomed preparations for the 2025 Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defense Conference, which Thailand and the U.S. will co-host. They also committed to enhanced teamwork to combat scams and online crime, addressing growing regional challenges in cybersecurity.
On the Thai-Cambodian border issue, Phumtham pointed out the swift deployment of the Interim Observer Team (IOT) to monitor the situation. While Thailand supports the concept of an ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), he noted that further discussions are needed to address legal and sovereignty concerns before its implementation.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to work closely on shared priorities, building stability and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
