In my opinion it doesn't matter now who started it, who has been escalating it, or why. I think the only important issue now is putting a stop to it and, I hope, maybe now that will happen. The finger pointing can come later.

Re: The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute
I'm extremely impressed with the support the evacuees have been receiving in the danger areas, e.g., Surin, Ubon, SiSaket, and Buriram.
They have set up literally hundreds of safety shelters outside of the danger areas to house the evacuees which is mostly being managed by local village bosses working with their district officials and emergency support teams.
Chiang Arena in Buriram, which is enormous, is currently housing a few thousand evacuees including the provision of medical care, food, bedding, etc. in real time.
The Thais are very good at taking care of their own - with this situation being no exception.
We have friends and family members in all four of the danger areas...all are safe...and we couldn't be prouder of the actions taken so far.
According to the family members we've been in contact with - most feel safe - and I think we've seen the worst of it.
My hat's off to the people of Thailand. Not the politicians..."The People".

Re: The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute
If this is true, and I believe it is, then this still isn't over.

Army condemns Cambodia for repeatedly breaking ceasefire agreement
July 30, 2025
The spokesman of the Royal Thai Army has denounced Cambodia for repeatedly breaking the Thai-Cambodian ceasefire agreement reached early this week.
Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree, spokesman for the army, told the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand that a Cambodian attack with rifles and hand grenades happened in Phu Makua in Thailand's northeastern province of Si Sa Ket at about 9pm on Tuesday.
“The use of weapons was inappropriate because it is a time of ceasefire and a period that we must have mutual trust. The army must condemn this kind of action. This is the second time for the use of weapons during the ceasefire agreement,” the spokesman said.
“Cambodia has not observed the agreed rule,” Maj Gen Winthai said.
The army spokesman also said that Thai forces remained along the border for surveillance and did not use their weapons.
He denied the rumour that drones were used to attack Wing 21 in nearby Ubon Ratchathani province. The spokesman said that some roof tiles were blown off by strong winds.
Government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said via the Facebook page of Government House on Wednesday morning that Cambodian troops fired rifles and threw hand grenades at Thai soldiers in Phu Makua.
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Wednesday that Cambodian attacks in Phu Makua continued until Wednesday morning and they happened after both countries’ ceasefire agreement had taken effect at midnight on Monday night.
“Such an act of aggression constitutes once again a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement by Cambodian forces and their apparent lack of good faith,” the ministry said.
“Thailand reiterates its full commitment to the ceasefire and the peaceful resolution of the current situation and strongly calls on Cambodia to immediately cease all violations and return to full compliance with the said ceasefire agreement,” it said.

Re: The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute
Either one side is not keeping the agreement or the other side has generals who want to prolong the conflict by making false accusations.
A few independent military observers would be helpful, but I suspect the Thai army would not want that.
Re: The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute
I bet TAT are having convulsions right now.
If this conflict continues you can bet that many tourists will forego making plans to visit Thailand this high season which is perfectly understandable. There's already been a ripple identified in foreign investment, and trade will be next.
Thailand and Cambodia trade billions of baht worth of products across their borders each month, mostly in in agriculture and textiles, which has already weakened their 2025 GNP forecasts. If this conflict continues both countries will stand to lose $'billions$ in projected tourist dollars which, when combined with the loss in trade and foreign investments, could be devastating to both countries.
This is the main reason why I think the conflict will end soon...fingers crossed.
Also...I would take these reports related to ceasefire breaches with a grain of salt - until these reports are being provided by independent (third-party) forward observers.

Re: The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute
Barry Kenyon's opinion is a little different. See: viewtopic.php?p=118504#p118504
When it comes to false information, believe what you want. I believe it comes from both sides. My own opinion is to believe nothing being spouted from both sides. I do believe the Cambodian government does repress and control news far more than Thailand does, but that still leaves me not knowing what to believe - so I believe nothing.
In my opinion this military violence was never necessary in the first place. I see no reason why they couldn't have sat down and hashed it out peacefully, perhaps by binding arbitration by an independent party agreed to by both sides. To me there is no justification for property having been destroyed and no justification for even one death. Those who do believe deaths were justified, tell that to the families.
I believe this whole thing has been the textbook definition of making a mountain out of a molehill - and I believe it is not over yet.

Re: The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute
I have removed this topic from "Announcements" because there has been no significant news for the past couple days. Of course, if anything new of importance breaks, I will place the topic back onto "Announcements"
Re: The Thailand-Cambodia border dispute
It was reported this morning that the ceasefire is finally holding and some of the border crossings could be reopening as soon as this afternoon.
That's pretty significant!
