If it works the same way it does in the Bahama casinos, Bahamians are not allowed to gamble in the casinos, but they are allowed to work in the casinos. If not, then who else would be working in the casinos?

It also works that way in the Florida Seminole Indian casinos. The Indians can work in the casinos, but cannot gamble. And that's on their reservation land where they get to make up their own rules about it.

I've no doubt Cambodians would be allowed to work in the Casinos.

However, if we consider, for example, the ones in Poipet, these are obviously aimed at foreigner customers, including Thais. Good luck with that when the border is closed.
These would probably be very quiet at the moment and I'd imagine the chances of getting or even keeping a job are not good.

Of course, the probability of getting jobs at casinos elsewhere in the country might be higher.

I just confirmed that one of my Cambodian regulars who has been almost permanently in Pattaya over the last 6 years has done exactly what he said & returned to Cambodia when his passport stamp expired. He's on Grindr there.

I don't understand what Thailand is trying to accomplish by making it difficult for Cambodians, people who have nothing to do with the dispute and no control of any kind over it. Making political pawns out of perfectly innocent people is not my idea of how to even help settle a dispute - for any country.

In my opinion, what the USA did to innocent Japanese-Americans during World War II is the most extreme example of what can happen if things get out of hand, combined with knee-jerk reactions.

Wise choice.

Keeping the borders closed and placing unrealistic visa constraints on visitors doesn't do Thailand or Cambodia any good. This thing will blow over in due time...it always does.

Agreed.
All this because one country allegedly dug a trench 150 metres beyond where the other country thinks the border should be.
So millions of dollars of economic disruption for land that might be worth a few thousand at best.

I'm also expecting it to blow over, but the current spat has been going on for about a month now.

Cambodia to start military conscription in 2026 as border tensions with Thailand continue

By Gavin Blackburn,EuroNews

July 14, 2025

The conscription law was passed in 2006, but never activated. Cambodians of both sexes, aged 18 to 30, must serve but for women, service is voluntary.

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Monday that his country will implement military conscription starting next year, in an announcement that coincides with ongoing border tensions with Thailand.

Relations between the neighbours have deteriorated sharply following an armed confrontation on 28 May in which one Cambodian soldier was killed in one of several small contested patches of land.

The sides have agreed to de-escalate their dispute to avoid further clashes, but continue to implement or threaten measures that have kept tensions high, alongside exchanging sharp words.

The dispute has also roiled Thailand's domestic politics.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended from office at the beginning of July after making what critics saw as a disparaging comment about her country's military in a phone call to Cambodia's former Prime Minister Hun Sen, who leaked a recording of it.

Hun Manet, Hun Sen's son and successor, said that starting in 2026, an existing law on conscription would be implemented to fill shortages and upgrade the military's capabilities.

"This is our commitment," Hun Manet said in a speech to military forces in the northern province of Kampong Chhnang. He wore his military uniform displaying his rank of a four-star general.

Hun Manet said that soldiers joining the ranks through conscription were more effective than a voluntary force and at least as professional.

The conscription law was passed in 2006, but never activated. Cambodians of both sexes, aged 18 to 30, must serve but for women, service is voluntary.

Thailand has long implemented conscription for men reaching 20 years of age, with an annual lottery determining who among them is called up.

The CIA's World Factbook estimates Cambodia's armed forces total 200,000 personnel, including a large force of military police.

It says Thailand has 350,000 active-duty personnel in its armed forces.

Hun Manet also called for increasing the military budget. Cambodia is one of the region's poorer countries, with a $9.32 billion (€7.99 billion) national budget for 2025, out of which the biggest share, $739 million (€633 million), went on defence.

He also repeated calls for Thailand to reopen without conditions all border crossings it had closed in June, saying that Cambodia would reciprocate within hours.

Such a waist of talent.

Just thinking about all those perky 18 year old Cambo boys who could be applying their talents elsewhere is depressing.

I live right across from one of the guard entrances to the Thai Navy Training Camp and often see the young recruits out doing their morning exercises wearing snug-fitting shorts. mmmmmmm!

I chat with them frequently at the base concession...VERY courteous and friendly...especially the gays...and there are many. The femboys seem to prefer the Navy over the Army. Must be those shorts!

A dangerous escalation is currently going on. Cambodia has been planting land mines in the disputed area. Two Thai soldiers have lost legs from these mines.

At 11:30 this morning, July 24, I received a message from a Thai friend who lives in that area. "Today here have a lot of planes today. Military planes."

So far airline flights between Thailand and Cambodia are still available, but your guess is as good as mine whether that will continue. Some of the border checkpoints have been totally closed now.

Cambodia opens fire at Thai military base

Civilians being evacuated near border in Surin, rocket launchers also targeting Thailand

July 24, 2025

Cambodian forces fire a BM-21 rocket launcher from their base at Khao Laem on Thursday morning. One of the rockets was said to have landed on the Thai side, striking an area near Ban Tuan in Si Sa Ket province.

Cambodian soldiers opened fire at a Thai military base in the northeastern province of Surin and launched rockets toward Si Sa Ket on Thursday morning as hostilities in the disputed border area worsened, according to the Royal Thai Army.

Thai soldiers heard a Cambodian unmanned aerial vehicle circling in front of the Ta Muen Thom temple ruins in Phanom Dong Rak district of Surin at 7.35am, the army said.

Six Cambodian soldiers then approached a barbed-wire fence in front of the Thai military base, armed with weapons including rocket-propelled grenades.

Thai soldiers at the base shouted to urge their Cambodian counterparts to avoid escalating the conflict.

At 8.20am Cambodia opened fire toward the Moo Pa military base, about 200 metres east of the Ta Muen Thom ruins, the 2nd Army Region said on its Facebook page.

The Cambodian forces set up artillery in nearby communities in a manner that used civilians as human shields, the Thai army alleged. Artillery fire was then directed at the temple ruins at 8.50am, it said.

At about 9.15am, Cambodian troops reportedly initiated gunfire, targeting the area near the Moo Pa base. One Thai soldier was injured as gunfire continued, with both small arms and heavy weaponry being deployed.

At 9.40am, Cambodia fired BM-21 rocket launchers at the Don Tuan temple ruins in Si Sa Ket province, Thailand said.

At 9.55am, Cambodian forces reportedly fired into a residential area near the border area development centre in Kap Choeng district of Surin. At least three civilians were reported injured. Authorities began evacuating civilians from the area as a precaution.

The attacks came a day after a landmine explosion injured five Thai soldiers, one of whom lost a leg, near the Chong An Ma border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani province.

The Thai army said the mines were recently planted by Cambodia.

Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, commander of the 2nd Region Army, which is responsible for the Northeast, ordered the border sealed and the temple ruins in Surin closed. The orders took effect on Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, the Thai government expelled the Cambodian ambassador, Hun Saroeun, while recalling the Thai envoy from Phnom Penh.

Bangkok has briefed foreign military attachés and diplomats stationed in the neighbouring country and is seeking action under the United Nations’ (UN) Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, while also engaging in bilateral efforts to resolve the dispute.

Though Thailand and Cambodia have a long history of border tensions, relations have remained largely stable since the 2011 conflict, which left dozens dead.

After the clash in May, Cambodia called for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague to help resolve four disputed land areas. Thailand, however, said it does not recognise the court’s jurisdiction in the matter.
