I imagine their logic - or lack of logic - is the average foreigner, resident or tourist - can easily afford more than 20 baht. I agree about the poorest foreign workers being left out of the loop. I don't know if they can afford even a 20 baht fare (and another 20 baht to return). I suppose they'll have to continue getting around however they've already been getting around.

To me it would make more sense instead of worrying about charging certain groups more than Thais, just charge 20 baht at the most for everybody. Doing it they way they are planning, that brings up the old complaint about dual pricing - one price for Thais, another price for foreigners. They have been promising to put a stop to that, so now instead they're going to do that on the trains? What's wrong with this picture? Just charge everyone the same price.

I wish a few countries would reciprocate and have a higher charge just for Thais !

Now to be fair, there are plenty of countries where regular users can get monthly tickets or something that is far cheaper than buying single tickets or a day pass. However, these are open to all nationalities. No racial discrimination.

The maximum fare on the Skytrain is 62 baht & I see no reason why a Thai should pay 20 baht and someone from Myanmar on a low wage should pay 62 baht. That's quite expensive for those with a 2 way commute & on a low wage.
For that matter, I don't see why anyone should have to pay a different fare based on nationality.

When I see news items like this I always wonder who came up with the idea in the first place. By process of elimination, someone had to be the first to come up with this fabulous idea of charging dual rates to ride the trains. Who? Why? They never tell us that part.

But isn't it a great idea, especially at a time when Thailand is desperate to attract tourists? I think it would make better sense to charge Thais the 20 baht and foreigners ride free . . .
