The double tracking of part of the railway network is in meter gauge. According to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-spee ... n_Thailand
the high-speed will be in standard gauge.
I would think the new tunnels are for high-speed rail and will be fitted with standard gauge later?
On the other hand, new Khon Kaen railway station is elevated and will some time run high-speed trains in standard gauge, but currently runs trains in meter gauge.

From what I could tell, the high speed lines will be taking a different route.

I also noted another short pair of tunnels for the existing line, that are complete, with tracks running into them from one side and out the other, but not actually connected on the east side.
Also many miles of normal speed dual track upgrade that are complete, except for a connection on the east side. With no evidence of work continuing to put these lines into use soon.

They are continuing work on the separate high speed lines. Nearby.

Finally my travels took me through the new tunnel (two actually) and there were no problems.

I wen't through in both directions in January. I even got my PM2.5 meter out. Readings in the tunnel were similar to outside, although I only measured this on the easy downhill leg.

At that time, the readings were about 20 in the countryside. They increased to 50 near the motorway and went back down to 20 about a mile the other side. Blame fires in neighbouring countries for that.🙂
