I also find such requests are increasing. I also do not respond.

Well today, just as we were wrapping up, my young friend had an incoming call from a very angry Thai lady about the rent. He did not ask me for a contribution this time and I suspect the timing of the call was a coincidence. But one can never be sure.

Apparently, the rent is 2500 per month. I thought he said his share was 1000 previously, but perhaps that's my mistake.
I thought boy rooms were usually in the 3000 per month ballpark, with some having their own room and others sharing, 3 or 4 to a room. I understood he shares.

Even with the 2500 figure, he could pay that several times over with tips off me in the last month. I'm not his only customer.

In my opinion, some bar boys are totally hopeless with money. He's probably arrived here on a motosai, when there is a 10 baht songthaew service which runs from the end of his road to the end of mine.
That's before we get onto the partying.

Also, if he can't pay the rent at the tail end of the high season, how would he manage in low season?

I can only repeat - in all my years living in Thailand I have never seen or heard of any boys actually losing their room.

I haven't heard of that either.

He's paid the rent, without any unearned donations from me.
Now he says he has no money for food.
I'll have to deliver the full lecture on budgeting.
He will probably implement none of it, but it might just stop him asking again. ;)

Perhaps I'm expected to be more sympathetic for someone claiming to be hungry, but one board member managed to go 14 days without any food*.

Besides either he really has enough money, or he's frittering it away on alcohol, gambling, motosai or whatever.

Along with never having seen any of these boys actually lose their room, I also have never seen any of them starve. Scam whoever you want boys, but I have been in Thailand much too long for any of your bullshit work with me.

The dead water buffalo and sick grandmother - coming up . . .

Probably.
If I deliver the full lecture on budgeting, he's probably not going to mention money again. That would be helpful.

Actually, if he were really short of food, I could walk down to where he lives, pop into the nearest 7-Eleven and invest 32 baht in one of those microwave meals with rice. Whilst he's eating that, take his empty water bottles and refill them at the nearest filtered water dispenser.

That feeds him, but somehow I suspect it's not quite what he's after.

Hmmm, I wonder what he could really be after. Three guesses . . .

Lao v Cambodian boys

Whilst every individual is different, on average, I notice some differences.

Lao: Reliable, attentive, sometimes almost docile and with an almost unlimited ability to satisfy the customer in bed.

Cambodian: More spice and more unpredictable. Some rough edges. Can still be great in bed, but the customer may need to be more assertive. Still good fun.

Another ridiculous request for "money for food".

Now even if I were his only customer in the last week, his earnings would still be above the Thai minimum wage for the week. And I'm almost certainly not his only customer, as I believe he's reasonably good at his job.

Just to be clear, I haven't sent a single baht in response to such requests and don't intend to.

I did tip him slightly more for our last encounter of my holiday.
