Wow, that is strange. I'm wondering if the recipients are residing in Thailand or outside of Thailand, whether back in the UK or elsewhere. Have any board members received this E-mail? If you have, what is your nationality and where do you reside?

To me, just as strange is only K-Bank seems to be doing this. No other bank has been sending out this E-mail and not a word about it in any of the English language Thai media other than the video Undaunted posted - not even a Barry Kenyon article.

And even more strange is if this really is not some sort of scam, I'd be interested to know why K-Bank would be trying to solicit people's information via E-Mail.

The only thing that would make any sense at all about it to me would be if this whole thing turns out to be some sort of knee-jerk reaction from someone in the higher-ups at K-Bank who misinterpreted whatever he (or she) misinterpreted and sent out this E-mail before, as usual, this was not first fully thought through.

Unless I am missing something, I would think K-Bank ought to send out another E-mail telling recipients some sort of error occurred and nobody needs to fill out any paperwork. In any case, as I said, if anyone at K-Bank is going to expect cooperation from me, they aren't going to get it. Just the latest thing to cause unnecessary anxiety for farang.

As far as I'm concerned, this makes the latest entry for my "I Don't Get It" list . . .

To clarify, for filing the FBAR, the requirement for US folks is if at any time during the calendar year you had an aggregate of more than US$10,000 in a foreign bank accounts.
Thanks for clarifying this error on my part. S/B $10,000 as you correctly stated.

I complete my FBAR each year on a secured Gov FBAR website...so the proper department receives this electronically. I also have my tax accountant send a hard copy of the FBAR along with my tax filing to IRS. This is probably not necessary but I do it anyway.

Thanks again for your clarifications.

I received the email in my Junk folder today…the day after I arrived in Thailand on holiday.

I am British and live in the UK although I visit Thailand usually twice a year.

As far as I know, the UK has no FBAR equivalent (which I thought meant ****ed Beyond All Recognition). I just need to report the interest on my tax return.
No e-mail from Kasikorn so far.

Am I wrong or are these Emails not being sent to Americans? I haven't received one and I know of no Americans who have.

Those of you who did receive one, are you going to fill out that paperwork or toss it into the bin?

I've continued monitoring Asiannow and other sources and still haven't seen or heard of an American receiving this message. It appears as if the vast majority of those receiving the message are still the Brits.

A British friend of mine who resides in my building is paranoid because the UK is apparently clamping down on British retirees who live abroad but falsely claim they still reside in the UK after retirement. He said that if they still reside in the UK after retirement (or say they do) they receive annual cost-of-living increases on their state pensions, although if they reside outside the UK they don't receive any increases. This sounds like a big deal in the UK right now. It's anyone's guess if there's a connection.

And why only K-Bank? Does K-Bank have offices in the UK? Do any other Thai Banks have offices in the UK?

I recently saw a branch of the Bangkok Bank in the London financial district. They claim to be the only Thai bank with a presence in the UK.

I too recieved this annoying e-mail from Kasikorn. They tell me to fill out 3 documents and e-mail back to them "no later than 20 December". I am not an american. I will ignore this and see what they will do.

I will however open an account with another bank and transfer half of my thai money or so into that bank instead so I'm not all to dependent on Kasikorn. If they start to make too much problems I will close my Kasikorn account completely.

I think that is a very good idea. Can't hurt a thing to be cautious and prepared.

I still don't see how anyone at K-Bank expects people to respond and start filling in and sending documents received in an Email.

Again, not a word on K-Bank's web site and no other banks are asking for these kinds of documents. Also, I have not seen anything about this in any English language Thai media. Not one word.

I would imagine by now K-Bank is being swarmed by complaints and refusals to cooperate. It will be interesting to see how, or even if, K-Bank responds and whether anyone at K-Bank will be soon looking for a new job for having started this in the first place.

Somehow I don't think people are lining up to open accounts at K-Bank at the moment.
