In keeping with Thailand's effort to move toward a cashless society, 7-Eleven has introduced Prompt Pay at 480 of its stores nationwide. That began September 27. You can still pay by traditional methods at all 7-Eleven stores.
So, what's the catch? Prompt Pay is available at 480 7-Elevens. The trouble is there are more than 14,000 7-Elevens in Thailand, with more opening virtually every day. That's a bit over 3% of the 7-Elevens where you can pay using Prompt Pay, which means 97% where you can't - and I have no idea which ones are accepting Prompt Pay and I have no idea why it is not available at all the 7-Elevens.
Maybe 7-Eleven is moving toward Prompt Pay available at all of them, but the latest number I have is 480. I suppose the only way to know if it is available at the 7-Eleven in which you find yourself is to simply ask.
Prompt Pay is available virtually everywhere. Even mom and pop street vendors are displaying Prompt Pay signs these days and accepting Prompt Pay. What's the big problem about 7-Eleven? I have no clue.
By the way, the largest 7-Eleven in the world is located in Pattaya. I'd say chances are good that particular one is accepting Prompt Pay. You'll find it on Pattaya Tai, not far from Sukhumvit.
