Re: Thailand's newest superstar - Mu Deng
Here's a video made Sunday, October 13 showing Mu Deng and the incredible mobs of people and cars lined up to see her. She has become world famous to the point that just a few days ago a group of businessmen from Abu Dhabi donated 5-million baht - the equivalent of nearly US $155,000 - for the care and feeding of Mu Deng.
I'd like to see her too, but I'll wait until the crowds die down before I go - assuming the crowds ever do die down . . .
Plenty more videos on YouTube.

I wonder how Trump would feel knowing this baby hippopotamus gets more people rallying to see her than he ever gets at his rallies.

Khao Kheow zoo logs over 30k visitors
by Onnucha Hutasingh
October 13, 2024
Over 30,000 people visited Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri over the long weekend holiday period, as admission fees were scrapped for kids under 12 and adults over 60 to mark King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great's Memorial Day which fell on Sunday.
Narongwit Chodcoy, zoo director, said the spike in visitor numbers was spurred by the popularity of the zoo's star attraction, the pygmy hippopotamus calf, Moo Deng.
Before Moo Deng went viral, between 600-700 people would visit the zoo each day.
However, on Saturday, over 10,000 people came to see the pygmy hippo calf and other animals on display at the zoo. The spike in numbers resulted in long queues and severe traffic jams in the area, with traffic backed up several kilometres from the zoo's entrance.
At 9am on Sunday, a three-kilometre traffic jam could be seen snaking out of the zoo's entrance, as enthusiastic visitors flocked from all over the country.
Krittanan Prempreeda, who lives in Samut Sakhon, said he left home at 3am. However, when he arrived at 7am, there was already a large crowd waiting to be admitted.
Admission was free on Sunday for visitors aged 60 and under 12 to mark the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, which is observed on Oct 13 each year.
Meanwhile, Khao Kheow Open Zoo posted on social media that Moo Deng T-shirts are available for purchase at the zoo until Monday. The shirts, it said, are not available for online purchase.
Moo Deng was born on July 10, and shortly after she was born, the pygmy hippo calf became a social media sensation thanks to “Kha Moo & the Gang” Facebook page, on which her keepers regularly post photos and videos of her activities.

Yes, but the key word is "plenty" and there certainly are plenty.
Mu Deng, on the other hand is an endangered species - but nothing endangered about the Dongtan hippos . . .

The article doesn't say, but if Moo Deng is drawing the largest crowds in 46 years, what was drawing in the crowds 46 years ago . . . ?

‘Moo Deng’ creates history at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, drawing unprecedented crowds in 46 years
By Pattaya Mail
October 25, 2024
No matter the day, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo is packed, especially on King Chulalongkorn Memorial Day. On October 23, children, seniors over 60, and kids under 12 or under 135 cm got free entry to the zoo.
‘Moo Deng’, the pigmy hippo that is also the star attraction, has become a historic phenomenon, drawing in record-breaking numbers of visitors. In the zoo’s 46-year history, no animal has ever captured the public’s attention like Moo Deng.
On this mid-week holiday, the zoo was flooded with visitors, causing traffic jams outside the premises. The zoo’s official page announced free entry for children on this special day, which also coincided with World Zoo Day, celebrated to raise awareness about the importance of zoos as wildlife conservation institutions.
General admission to Khao Kheow Open Zoo is priced at 200 THB for adults, 40 THB for children (ages 3-12), and foreign adults at 350 THB, with children (ages 3-12) priced at 120 THB. Special categories, such as seniors over 60, people with disabilities, and children under 3, get free entry. The zoo is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
