Pattaya's Chinese Future
Re: Pattaya's Chinese Future
I'm wary of anecdotal evidence but my impression this trip is that there has been a change in the make-up of the Chinese groups here in Pattaya. There seem to be more groups of young people- mixed sexes, early twenties, perhaps late teens- and perhaps fewer families. I base this mainly on what I see in Central and Royal Garden.
University holidays in China? more independence for the young? a more affluent section of the community? Whatever, they seem to be enjoying themselves, entirely harmlessly, and contributing to some of the ailing businesses- such as Ripley's.
Also anecdotally, my impression is that there are some younger (by that I mean late twenties/early thirties) Chinese men in Babylon nowadays. I think they come in groups.

I too have noticed a younger Chinese crowd....My only issue is the impact that their huge tour buses continue to have on Pattaya traffic.

My impression is that in Babylon and in the gay bars they are not nearly as many mainland Chinese as there are Asians from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Hong, Malaysia etc. Perhaps mostly ethnic Chinese and even conversing in Mandarin but their nationality is not China.Oliver wrote:Also anecdotally, my impression is that there are some younger (by that I mean late twenties/early thirties) Chinese men in Babylon nowadays. Of the group that I have the best luck "connecting" with are the Malaya nationals of Chinese decent. The few times I've noticed mainland Chinese in the saunas and bars they keep in a tight exclusive circle from both Thai and Farang. In many years of coming to Thailand and living here I've never had an successful connection with a guy from mainland China, Singapore or Japan. All the rest have been checked off my 'done that' list.
Last night I noticed visiting Asians in high numbers on Soi Twilight. They packed most of the bars. I walked in and out of Hotmale at 2230 as the only seats were in the far corners.
These visiting gay Asians not on escorted tours are trickling into Pattaya now days. I've notice more and more every year.

I agree with Trongpai. The younger Asians visiting Bangkok's gay scene are rarely if ever from mainland China - at least not yet. I am sure they will start coming sooner rather than later, though.
Re: Pattaya's Chinese Future
Wouldn't it be wonderful to have openly gay guys from mainland China come to Thailand? That would require quite a change in Chinese social policies.
Re: Pattaya's Chinese Future
Sitting at Oscar Bar in Boyztown I have gotten a wink and a nod from some of the young guys from Mainland China when I wave them over. Of course they never accept my invite.
