Despite all the traffic deaths - 236 as of Tuesday morning - the Pattaya festivities are far more subdued than I was expecting after the Covid restrictions. As far as I can tell, the activities and water splashing are occurring only in certain areas. Hardly anything at all where I am, on "The Dark Side." Even traffic has been much lighter than on normal days. In my area you wouldn't even know the holiday is happening. Very light traffic and almost no water splashing at all. The only indications that anything is happening is most people wearing their Songkran flowered shirts and several venues closed. That's about it. Nothing else out of the ordinary.
In Pattaya I have not heard anything about the usual groups of heavily tattooed, drunken farang busy splashing people on motorbikes and baht buses. Somehow I doubt many are disappointed by their absence.
Most of the water splashing frenzy so far seems to be taking place in Bangkok, mainly on the famous Khao San Road. I haven't heard about any water splashing at all in Bangkok's gay bar areas.
Wednesday, April 19 is Pattaya's "Big Day". We'll see just how big it will be. I will post what we know once we know it. And please, those of you who can tell us what you are observing and if you have any photos, please post them.
After Pattaya's Songkran ends Wednesday evening, probably Friday or Saturday I will delete this topic.

Re: Songkran 2023
This still works out as being slightly below the normal traffic death rate for the whole year.
If Songkran usually has no effect on the traffic deaths, it's off topic.
At least to the same extent as all the other things which Songkran has no effect on, such as pollution, the weather and zips on trousers.

Re: Songkran 2023
Here is the way it was for "The Dark Side" in Pattaya. This photo was taken from Sukhumvit in front of Soi Siam Country Club, one of the major sois into "The Dark Side".

Again, if you want to keep any of the photos and videos posted, I suggest copying them now. In a couple days I will delete this topic since this year's Songkran will be over. In Pattaya it ends about three hours from the time of this post.

That's more like it, although I do note that he has prudently switched to dark shorts before heading out into a combat zone.
