eating alone?
Re: eating alone?
Thank you gentlemen for your kind replies.
My question sounds (and is) stupid but I had an experience in Bangkok…
When I was eating alone in a restaurant, a waitress asked me why I was eating alone.
She was not teasing me, it was just a simple question for her as it looked quite strange for Thais to eat alone. Other than me, all the tables were occupied with couples, families, or groups. I cannot explain why but from the moment she asked me so I felt so uncomfortable to be a lone customer.
Well well, I understand I do not have to worry about that in Pattaya and can pick up some restaurants recommended.
Thank you again, I appreciate your help.
BTW, BS means boy special as lvdkeyes said.

Re: eating alone?
I think you misinterpreted the intent of her question and you should not have felt embarrassed. Also, I see Thais eating alone quite often every day. If another waiter asks why you're eating alone, just say the same thing Greta Garbo said: "I want to be alone."hayase wrote:When I was eating alone in a restaurant, a waitress asked me why I was eating alone.
Re: eating alone?
G.B.'s statement made me realize that I have never seen a Thai eat alone they eat as a group, the idea of alone time to most Thais I've met is an alien concept. I have experienced telling more than one Thai guy I need some space and the usual reply is why what did I do? In my opinion the village mentality of constant togetherness makes for some strange cultural norms. The same applies to room sharing. Truly if a Thai went to the "Monkey house" the hardest punishment would be solitary confinement.Gaybutton wrote:If another waiter asks why you're eating alone, just say the same thing Greta Garbo said: "I want to be alone."

Either you're blind or you're joking. At those small mom-and-pop restaurants you've never seen Thais eating alone? Then I suppose the ones I see, every day, are overcoming that alien concept. Most people I know, both farang and Thai, prefer to eat with friends, but they'll eat alone too.Undaunted wrote:G.B.'s statement made me realize that I have never seen a Thai eat alone they eat as a group

Thank you GB but no, I cannot say I want to be alone! I've been always alone in my closet. While I'm in Thailand I wanna be not.If another waiter asks why you're eating alone, just say the same thing Greta Garbo said: "I want to be alone."

Re: eating alone?
Ok, you could always invite a boy to eat with you. You could also drop by Barmy Army Headquarters (a.k.a. Corner Bar) or someplace else and make friends with other farang. You will probably very easily find people who would love to eat with you.hayase wrote:I cannot say I want to be alone!
Re: eating alone?
We have a group of between 2-12 people that go to dinner, almost every night, together. We seldom dine at places that cost over 400b for the evening, and have a wide range of personalities. When you arrive, give me your phone number, and I will happily add you to the nightly list!
Re: eating alone?
Really can we have the dinner list names first!!! I’m sure some of them would choke on their dinner and want to talk amongst themselves if i turned up, my dinner group are the same from 4 to 24 all depends on who is in the country at the time, even though now days the numbers are kept down, as you really can’t talk to everyone with 10 to 18 on average, as we use to have just means more dinners when I’m in townTheCornerBar wrote:We have a group of between 2-12 people that go to dinner, almost every night, together.
