The Corner - Bangkok

Post by Gaybutton »

I just returned from a few days in Bangkok and found a restaurant I'll be going to from now on every time I'm in Bangkok - The Corner.

For those of you familiar with the Sathorn area, especially if you stay at hotels such as The Pinnacle or The Malaysia, The Corner is within easy walking distance. One of my favorite Italian restaurants in Bangkok is the Lido, just a short walk from the Malaysia Hotel, where I usually stay. (As an aside, a few boys do hang out in the Malaysia's parking lot, hoping for customers)

I decided to walk just about a block further from the Lido and there it was - The Corner. It's a small place - about 10 tables, and I was lucky to get one. It's quite popular. It might be a good idea to make a booking if you want to try it. Meanwhile, I had never heard of it until I stumbled upon it. I asked - it's been there three years.

There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating is air conditioned.

The food, service, and pricing is excellent. First they serve a small appetizer. Mine was a slice of crusty French bread served with an Italian style salsa. I tried their "Sicilian Salad" for a starter. It's huge and delicious. It includes small Italian sausages and I loved it. It's served with French bread basket. I had their pork chop for my entree. It was grilled perfectly and an excellent seasoning.

The menu includes Italian, Mediterranean, European, and Thai dishes. I overheard people at other tables commenting about how good their own dinners were. There is also a wine list or you can order wine served by the glass.

Total price for me, including water - 475 baht - and very well worth it.

Rather than reviewing it further, here are some reviews from others, and the location:

I echo your views on The Corner where I have dined several times. Excellent restaurant! Its delivery service is always piping hot (the food that is!)

Sad to say I do not agree with your comments on the Lido. I have only eaten there twice and enjoyed neither. I have never known an Italian restaurant get a bolognese sauce wrong, but the Lido did. Far too runny and far too salty. It was like the top of the salt cellar had fallen off as they were preparing it. The tiramisu was nothing like any other tiramisu I have tasted anywhere in the world. It was much more like a totally bland ice cream cake - no taste of mascarpone and not a hint of any liqueur. To be fair, that was 5 years ago before its short move down the soi. Perhaps the management has changed.

You may know there is a fabulous Italian restaurant not very far away - Il Bolognese. It is hidden behind South Sathorn off Soi 7 but can also be approached from Suan Phlu. A little pricier but great ambience, superb food, a good wine selection including by the glass and always a warm welcome. I've eaten there maybe 30 times and never once had anything other than a great meal. Its chocolate mousse is as good as any in Asia in terms of taste, texture and general excellence. Even though it is not always on the evening menu, it is on the set lunch menu and so they will usually get a helping for you if you ask. (Shows that I always look at the dessert selection first :D )

No, I did not know about that restaurant. I'll certainly give it a try next time I go to Bangkok. Thank you for posting about it.

Trongpai introduced me to another excellent Italian restaurant, very near Nana Plaza. Via Vai. I've eaten there 3 times and definitely enjoyed it.

Also, if you know other "worth a try" restaurants in Bangkok, I hope you'll post about them. I don't go to Bangkok often enough to know where the good lesser known restaurants are. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would greatly appreciate recommendations.

While we're at it, being a Chinese food fan, any recommendations for Chinese restaurants in Bangkok's Chinatown or elsewhere in Bangkok?
