This is a very major incident which the powers-that-be seem to be downplaying publicly, but likely being taken very seriously behind the scenes.
I wouldn't travel to Myanmar in the first place as long as that evil junta is in power, but now would definitely not be the time to visit Myanmar or even Thai towns close to the border. Far too many violent incidents have occurred.
This is a developing story which will be updated as new information comes in.

Three Thai Fishing Boats Fired Upon by Myanmar Patrols, 1 Person Dead, 2 People Injured
By Kittisak Phalaharn
1 December, 2024
In the early hours of November 30th, 2024, the Thai-Myanmar Maritime Border Fisheries Coordination Centre reported that three armed Myanmar patrol vessels allegedly fired on three Thai fishing boats operating in Thai territorial waters near Ranong.
The incident occurred as the Thai boats were reportedly casting nets. One fishing vessel was struck, prompting its crew to jump into the sea, leaving three missing.
By morning, the missing crew members were located, with one, a 24-year-old Thai engineer, found deceased. Two others, Myanmar nationals, survived with injuries.
Two additional fishing boats were affected. The crew of one vessel sustained minor injuries, including gunshot grazes and electric shock burns, with one still receiving treatment at Ranong Hospital. Another boat crew remained unscathed but shaken by the events.
A Thai fishing vessel with 31 crew members, 4 Thais and 27 Myanmar nationals, was reportedly seized and forcibly towed to Kyun Shuai Island in Myanmar’s Kawthaung Province.
Thai authorities lodged a protest with Myanmar’s local border committee. Efforts to secure the crew’s release are ongoing. However, there is no immediate response from the Myanmar ruling military junta regarding the incident as of press time.
The Foreign Ministry, under Thai Prime Ministerial orders, is pressing Myanmar for a full investigation into possible international law violations and excessive force.
The Thai embassy in Yangon is actively coordinating with Myanmar officials to address the situation and ensure justice for the victims.

Thailand seeks release of fishing crew, protests Myanmar attack on boats
by Reuters
December 1, 2024
Authorities are negotiating for the release of four Thai crew members arrested with a fishing boat towed to Myanmar and protesting against a gun attack on 15 fishing boats early Saturday morning.
Maj Gen Thanathip Sawangsaeng, spokesman for the Defence Ministry, said on Sunday that Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai ordered Thai officials in the Thai-Myanmar Local Border Committee to negotiate with their Myanmar counterparts for the release of the four Thai crewmembers.
The four were among 31 crewmembers on the Sor Charoenchai 8 fishing boat that Myanmar seized on Saturday. The 27 other crewmembers are Myanmar nationals. The boat and the crewmembers were reportedly taken to Zedetkyi island.
Thai authorities expected the release of the four Thais and their fishing boat in a few days, said the defence spokesman.
Thai officials were investigating the attack of Myanmar vessels against 15 Thai fishing boats 12 nautical miles from Koh Phayam island of Ranong province at 1.15am on Saturday. The probe would determine the exact location of the attack, Maj Gen Thanathip said.
In the meantime, Thai officials used a diplomatic channel to protest against the attack and called on Myanmar to consider whether it was an overreaction, the spokesman said.
During the attack, one crewmember of a fishing boat that came under fire jumped into the sea and drowned, he said.
Speaking on the matter, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said in Chiang Rai province on Sunday that the government was opposed to violence and was waiting for the investigation into the issue.
Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said he called in the Myanmar ambassador to Bangkok on Monday to discuss the matter and request the immediate release of the Thai crewmembers.
The minister said that the four Thais were safe.

Thailand protests against Myanmar’s navy firing at Thai fishing boats
December 2, 2024
Thailand protested against an incident involving Myanmar’s navy firing on Thai fishing vessels, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Dec 1, after one fisherman drowned, two were injured and dozens were detained from one of the boats.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, posted on Facebook expressing her concerns regarding the incident on November 30, where a Thai fishing boat and its crew were detained and brought ashore by Myanmar authorities. She has instructed relevant agencies, including the Royal Thai Navy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to coordinate with Myanmar to assist the Thai crew members urgently. According to the latest updates, communication with Myanmar has been initiated through military and diplomatic channels, and the situation is being closely monitored.
Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand for a meeting on December 2, 2024, to formally address Thailand's concerns over the incident.
The Prime Minister extended her condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured and expressed her concern for all the affected crew members. She assured that Thai authorities are working closely with relevant parties to ensure their well-being and to expedite their safe return home.
Paetongtarn questioned claims that the fishing boats had intruded into Myanmar’s territorial waters when Myanmar’s navy opened fire on the vessels.
The Thai Defence Ministry earlier said two of 15 Thai fishing vessels were fired on when they were between 7.4km and 10.6km inside Myanmar’s territorial waters near the southern Thai province of Ranong.
“It is inconclusive,” Paetongtarn said when reporters asked whether Thai fishing boats had encroached on Myanmar’s territorial waters.
“We don’t support violence, whatever the circumstances,” she said, adding that Thailand was seeking more details on the incident and a quick release of four Thai nationals who were among the 31 fishermen detained.
Myanmar’s junta did not immediately respond to a telephone request for comment.
Thai Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said a letter protesting against the use of force was sent to Myanmar through a local border mechanism, demanding clear details about what happened and a quick return of the Thai boat and crew detained.
Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa also issued a letter of concern over the incident to the Myanmar government and summoned the Myanmar ambassador for a meeting on Dec 2, seeking clarification about what happened and a quick release of the four Thai nationals.
Myanmar has been in crisis since 2021 when the military seized power, toppling an elected government and sparking an armed rebellion by crushing protests with lethal force.

Well, if even the Thai defence ministry says the boats were inside Burmese waters, that seems likely to be correct.

Re: Myanmar navy fires on Thai fishing boats - 1 dead, boats seized, crews arrested
Whether they were or not, that seems to be quite a reaction when they easily could have seized the boats and taken the crews prisoner without firing a shot. What defense could a fishing boat have against a navy?
Unless someone overreacted or made a mistake, I would have thought the last thing Myanmar would want to do is provoke a serious incident with Thailand, especially without being able to be certain as to how Thailand would respond. The Myanmar junta doesn't exactly seem to be very interested in making friends.
In my opinion, the best thing Myanmar could do now would be to immediately release the crews and boats, better still with an apology (that won't happen), and substantial financial compensation to the family of the boy who died (that won't happen either).

Govt: Myanmar's attack on unarmed Thai fishing boats was 'overreaction'
Defence Minister Phumtam demands return of 4 detained crew
by Mongkol Bangprapa
December 2, 2024
The Thai government has insisted that the Myanmar military opening fire at Thai fishing boats in the Andaman Sea on Saturday was an "overreaction" and repeated its demand for the immediate return of the four detained Thai crewmembers.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said on Monday that the Foreign Ministry had already sent protest letters to Myanmar, stressing that the Thai vessels involved in the incident were unarmed fishing boats.
“It is unclear if we really strayed into their territory [but] they were fishing boats. So, we protested in the letters that it was an overreaction,” he said.
The Foreign Ministry also summoned the Myanmar ambassador to Bangkok to discuss the matter and the meeting would likely occur in a few days, Mr Phumtham said.
He said that the government was trying to coordinate the return of four Thai crewmembers. “They must come back,” Mr Phumtham said.
The defence minister also said that such a marine incident between the Thai and Myanmar militaries had not happened for three decades.
Meanwhile, Maj Gen Thanathip Sawangsaeng, spokesman for the Defence Ministry, said most of the fishing boats were not from Ranong but from Phangnga. Their captains were not familiar with the area and might have gone one or two nautical miles into Myanmar waters.
In Saturday's incident a fleet of 15 Thai fishing boats off Ranong's Koh Phayam was confronted by Myanmar-flagged ships at about 1.15am. One fisherman drowned and two others were injured in the attack.
The spokesman said the Myanmar military initially followed international practices by turning on warning lights to demand that the fishing boats stop for a search. As the boats did not stop, the next step was to fire warning shots at the boats to stop them, he said – but they should not have just opened fire.
“The shooting must aim at gunwales, not hulls. Evidence shows that gunwales were shot but there were too many shots. That is why the Thai government sent two letters to protest Myanmar right away,” Maj Gen Thanathip said.
Along with the protest, the letters also demanded the immediate release of four Thais and 27 Myanmar nationals working on the seized fishing boat, the defence spokesman said, referring to the Sor Charoenchai 8 boat seized by Myanmar following the incident on Saturday.
The spokesman said Thai authorities expected to receive the four Thai crewmembers when the Thai-Myanmar Township Border Committee meets to discuss the issue in two days.
Gen Songwit Noonpackdee, chief of the defence forces, said on Monday that the four Thais were safe.

Myanmar ambassador summoned over detention of Thai nationals
December 2, 2024
Maris urges Myanmar to release Thai fishing vessel and four detained Thai crew members without delay.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Sangiampongsa revealed via X on Monday that he had directed the director general of the Department of East Asian Affairs to summon the Myanmar ambassador to Thailand for a meeting.
During the discussion that ensued, Thailand expressed deep concern over a recent incident where Myanmar soldiers reportedly fired on a Thai fishing vessel and detained its crew, which included both Thai and Myanmar nationals, taking them back to Myanmar.
Maris urged Myanmar to release the Thai fishing vessel and the four detained Thai crew members without delay.
Thai authorities have also requested access to visit the detained crew.
In response, the Myanmar ambassador expressed condolences for the loss of life during the incident and pledged to follow up on the matter to ensure progress.
Meanwhile, the Thai ambassador to Yangon traveled on Monday to meet with the permanent secretary of Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Naypyidaw to address the issue.
The matter has also been brought to the attention of Myanmar’s deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs.
Maris reaffirmed that the welfare of Thai citizens remains a top priority and said the Thai government is taking urgent measures to secure the release of the detained Thai nationals as quickly as possible.

Phumtham updates on arrest of Thai fishermen by Myanmar military
December 2, 2024
Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has provided an update on the case of four Thai fishermen detained by the Myanmar military after being accused of encroaching into Myanmar’s territorial waters, leading to the use of weapons.
He said representatives of the Township Border Committee (TBC) from both sides have engaged in discussions. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a formal protest and summoned the Myanmar ambassador for further discussions. He emphasised that the matter must proceed through diplomatic channels.
However, the military has said it is fully committed to addressing the situation. At this point, it is still unclear whether the Thai fishermen actually violated Myanmar’s waters. The vessel that detained the fishermen was actually a fishing boat, not an armed vessel, which prompted the protest against what was deemed excessive force.
Phumtham, who also serves as deputy prime minister, said normal procedures are being followed regarding casualties. Among the 31 crew members on the detained vessel, only four are Thai nationals, while the rest are Myanmar nationals. Efforts now are focused on negotiating the repatriation of the four Thai fishermen. "Myanmar must return them to us," he stressed.
The defence minister noted that a similar incident occurred more than 30 years ago and that issue was resolved, and no further problems have arisen in the years since. The area in question, characterised by numerous islets, sees regular interaction between the people of both countries, making cross-border activities a normal occurrence with mutual leniency.
"We hope this area can serve as a shared livelihood zone for both sides, while each side may assert its rights. Therefore, let the Ministry of Foreign Affairs conduct negotiations. There’s no need to jump to conclusions at this stage," Phumtham said.
When asked whether this incident constituted an excessive use of force, he suggested directing such questions to the Royal Thai Navy. He emphasised the importance of maintaining a unified stance and deferred the matter to the Navy for further explanation.
Meanwhile, Jirayu Huangsub, the government spokesman, said the situation requires a thorough examination to understand its origins. Only after all the facts are clear should Thailand adopt a definitive stance. He highlighted the sensitivity of the issue, noting that whether it involved Thai encroachment or the other side’s overreach, comprehensive information must guide any decisions or actions.

Myanmar releases 4 Thai crew
by Mongkol Bangprapa and Poramet Tangsathaporn
December 7, 2024
The government will request the return of a confiscated Thai fishing boat following the release of four Thai crew members by Myanmar authorities yesterday, according to Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Sor Charoenchai 8 was seized, and 31 crew members -- four Thais and 27 from Myanmar -- were detained for almost a week (since Saturday) after Myanmar patrol boats attacked a fleet of Thai fishing vessels off Ranong province.
The release of the four Thais was expected on Friday after Thai authorities confirmed that they had been to Kawthaung in Myanmar, opposite Ranong, following efforts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence and the Thai-Myanmar Township Border Committee (TBC).
Mr Phumtham said that the four Thais were expected to return without any incident and that they would come back once the immigration process was completed.
As for the confiscated fishing vessel, the Thai authorities would coordinate with their Myanmar counterparts to request its return. The matter should become clear after the Thai-Myanmar TBC meeting.
According to the defence minister, the government is still gathering facts involving the incident and will protest if Myanmar authorities are found to have overreacted.
Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said that medical teams were on standby to receive the four men who would undergo health and mental health screenings.
The Royal Thai Navy also posted a picture of the four Thai crew members on its Facebook page, saying they were safe.
Nikorndej Balankura, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa had ordered the Consular Department representative to travel to Ranong and prepare to receive the Thais.
He said he had no information regarding the release of the confiscated fishing boat. When asked if the release was conditional, following reports that the boat was linked to the Red Wa group, he said that the initial report identified it as a fishing boat, but Myanmar authorities are conducting further investigations.
He insisted the ministry has no information about the Red Wa group and that the incident involved a fishing boat illegally operating in the neighbouring country's waters.
"It was reported only as a 'fishing boat'. We have not received any information from the Myanmar government on whether this boat is connected to the Red Wa group. Therefore, this situation involves a Thai fishing boat encroaching on another country's territorial waters," he said.
He said that no ransom was demanded for the release, which was the result of cooperation between the Thai and Myanmar governments.

Re: Myanmar navy fires on Thai fishing boats - 1 dead, boats seized, crews arrested
Welcome to the latest item for my "I Don't Get It" list. I don't see what is motivating Myanmar to use these fishermen as political pawns. To accomplish what? What does Myanmar have to gain by continuing to hold them? I would have thought Myanmar would have wanted to release them quickly in order to maintain friendly relations with Thailand. But what they are doing makes no sense at all to me.

Four Thai Fishermen Still Being Held in Myanmar Despite Prior Promises of Release
By Goongnang Suksawat
9 December, 2024
Despite earlier assurances from Myanmar authorities that four Thai fishermen involved in a major incident between Myanmar military and their vessel that we reported on here would be released, they remain in custody, raising concerns about the ongoing diplomatic negotiations between Thailand and Myanmar.
The incident, which unfolded on November 30, involved the Myanmar navy opening fire on Thai fishing vessels, leading to one death and the detention of 31 crew members. Among those detained, four were Thai nationals, with the rest being Myanmar citizens.
Last week, the Myanmar government had reportedly confirmed plans to release the Thai fishermen, with Thai officials preparing to receive them at the border. However, as of December 8th, 2024, the fishermen have yet to be repatriated. The delay has been attributed to bureaucratic processes and the absence of a formal release order from Myanmar officials, which now evidently needs approval directly from Myanmar’s top military affairs committee, delaying the process. Myanmar is essentially in a state of civil war between the military junta and multiple armed ethnic groups. This is not the only issue Thailand and Myanmar have had recently, as there have also been alleged tensions between one armed ethnic group, who yesterday denied there being any major problems.
The Thai Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has expressed optimism about the return of the fishermen, stating that they are safe and that negotiations are ongoing. However, the lack of progress has led to frustration among the families of the detained fishermen and has sparked discussions about the reliability of diplomatic assurances in such sensitive cross-border incidents.
The Thai government continues to engage in diplomatic efforts to secure the release of its citizens. As for the fate of the remaining Myanmar fishermen who were working in Thailand, their circumstances are also unclear.

Re: Myanmar navy fires on Thai fishing boats - 1 dead, boats seized, crews arrested
This is just incredible. Now instead of releasing them as they had said they would do, they are sentencing them to years in prison and fines. WHY? And what is Thailand going to do about it, if anything? Are these fishermen being used as pawns in some sort of political maneuvering? What's going on here?
Meanwhile, the other crew members who have not been sentenced to anything and apparently are not being accused of anything are still being held. You can guess for yourselves the kinds of conditions they are being held in.

Myanmar court sentences Thai fishing crew members to prison
Boat owner gets six years in prison, three others four years each, plus fines
December 16, 2024
A source from Kawthaung province, Myanmar, reported Monday on the verdict of the Kawthaung Provincial Court in the case of four Thai members of a fishing-boat crew who were detained by a Myanmar military vessel along with 27 Myanmar crew members.
The fishing boat was seized near Koh Yan Chueak in Kawthaung province on November 30 while fishing in overlapping maritime areas between the two countries.
The court sentenced the boat owner to five years in prison for illegal fishing in Myanmar waters without authorisation, and an additional one year for illegal entry to the country, totalling six years of imprisonment, along with a fine of 200,000 kyats (about 3,200 baht).
As for the other three Thais, the court sentenced each of them to three years in prison for unauthorised fishing and one additional year for illegal entry, resulting in a total of four years of imprisonment for each, along with a fine of 30,000 kyats per person.
On November 30, a Myanmar warship opened fire on three Thai fishing vessels operating in Thai waters, resulting in the death of one crew member and the capture of 31 others.
Reports indicate that the vessels were fishing around 20 kilometres west of Koh Phayam when they were approached by Myanmar boats, prompting the Thai fishermen to attempt an escape by cutting their nets and accelerating their engines.
Initial information from local authorities indicated that two Thai fishing boats, “Ranong 333” and “Charoenchai 8”, were taken into Myanmar waters, while two crew members from the “Mahalapthanawat 4” sustained injuries, one due to gunfire from the Myanmar vessel and another from electrocution.
Reports indicate that members of the “Ranong 333” crew jumped overboard to escape the gunfire; one of them drowned.
As of now, 31 crew members, comprising four Thais and 27 Burmese, have been detained by Myanmar authorities .
The Thai government formally protested to Myanmar over the violent actions against an unarmed fishing vessel.
Initially, Thai officials said Myanmar would expedite the release of the Thai nationals. However, news later emerged that the Myanmar court had sentenced all four Thai crew members to prison.

Re: Myanmar navy fires on Thai fishing boats - 1 dead, boats seized, crews arrested
Now they're back to releasing them. It seems that all you have to do is wait 5 or 10 minutes and the story changes.
I kinda like the way the Minister dodges and evades answering direct questions.

Myanmar will free arrested fishermen on Jan 4, says Thai defence minister
December 17, 2024
The Myanmar government will on Jan 4 free four Thai fishermen arrested on a fishing boat off Ranong province late last month, according to Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Mr Phumtham said on Tuesday morning that foreign affairs officials discussed the matter with Myanmar counterparts and learned that the Thai fishermen could be released from Kaw Thaung on Jan 4, which is Independence Day of Myanmar.
Asked if Thai fishermen intruded into the Myanmar waters late last month, Mr Phumtham said action should be taken in accordance with facts.
Asked about Thai authorities’ defence for the detained fishermen, the minister said the matter was sensitive and he prioritised their release.
“I think this benefits the country the most. More answers to the question could have impacts. I also do not want the issue to be politicised in the country. Let me take care of the safety of the Thai people first,” Mr Phumtham said.
Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said the Thai fishermen were accused of invading Myanmar waters and Myanmar had to take normal legal prosecution process.
In response to the report that Myanmar’s court sentenced the Thai fishermen to four to six years’ imprisonment, Mr Maris said officials could seek pardons.

Re: Myanmar navy fires on Thai fishing boats - 1 dead, boats seized, crews arrested
This one is on my "I Don't Get It" list. Myanmar has released 151 Thais being held in their prisons, but the 4 Thai fishermen were not among them despite Myanmar's promises to release them. Why not? Your guess is as good as mine as to how many more Thais are also still held in Myanmar prisons, but one thing is for sure - I'm not going to Myanmar.

Myanmar releases prisoners
4 Thai fishermen arrested last year not among them

The four fishing vessel crew from Thailand who were detained in late November by Myanmar soldiers for allegedly invading Myanmar waters weren't among the 151 Thai prisoners released on Saturday.
The 151 Thais were repatriated back to Thailand through the second Thai-Myanmar friendship bridge in Chiang Rai Saturday afternoon, said Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelabutr, Senior Inspector General of the Royal Thai Police and Director of the Police Cyber Taskforce (PCT).
"We have coordinated with Myanmar authorities for an urgent flight to bring 151 Thai nationals back home to assist victims and expand efforts to apprehend online gambling and call centre scam gangs," he said.
Pol Gen Thatchai and other senior police on Saturday travelled to the second Thai-Myanmar friendship bridge in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district to wait for the arrival of the Thai prisoners.
Following the arrangement with Myanmar authorities to repatriate the Thai nationals, Pol Gen Thatchai said, he was assigned by Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetch, Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, to oversee this case.
Once back in Thailand, the 151 Thais will undergo a screening process to determine who were victims deceived into the operations and who were active members of online gambling or call centre scam gangs.
The Thai police have records of individuals involved in these criminal networks, some of whom falsely claim to be victims to avoid prosecution.
Pol Gen Thatchai has instructed officers from the PCT and state authorities to investigate and prosecute all those involved.
The Thai prisoners were among the about 180 foreign prisoners in Myanmar who were released in the neighbouring country's annual amnesty to mark its independence day, according to reports by Myanmar media.
In total, 5,864 prisoners were released on Saturday, Gen Zaw Min Tun of Myanmar told local media, adding of this number, 600 were Myanmar politicians and 180 were foreigners.
And of the 180 foreign prisoners released, most were Thai and Indonesian nationals who had been arrested either in Myanmar's Tachileik town for being involved with illegal online gambling or elsewhere for illegal fishing in Myanmar waters, Gen Zaw Min Tun said.
These prisoners had been serving their sentences for some time before their release, said Myanmar media.
The general, however, didn't mention the four Thai crew members on the Thai fishing trawler detained by Myanmar soldiers in the sea of the southern province of Ranong province last year.
Previously, Thai Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told the media the four Thai fishermen would be freed by Jan 4.
His assurance was also followed by a hopeful remark on Dec 19 by Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa who said he expected the release of the four Thais to come soon.
Earlier, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra had also hinted the good news about the anticipated release of the four Thai nationals should come slightly after the New Year.
The four were captured following a gun attack on 15 fishing boats off Ranong on Nov 30 by Myanmar patrol boats.
During the attack, one crew member of a fishing boat jumped into the sea and died.
Thai government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub on Saturday declined to comment on the matter, while Mr Phumtham couldn't be reached for comment. It is unclear if they can still expect an early New Year release of the four.
Saturday's development prompted Nipit Intarasombat, a former Democrat MP from Phatthalung, to reiterate his questions to the government about the violent attack on the fishermen.
He asked whether it was true the Thai fishermen had invaded Myanmar maritime territory before they were detained and whether legal assistance by the Thai government had been provided to the four fishermen.

Fate of four Thai fishermen detained in Myanmar still uncertain
Remain in jail despite assurances from Myanmar authorities that they would be released on Saturday

The fate of four Thai fishermen detained in Myanmar remains uncertain despite assurances from Myanmar authorities that they would be released on Saturday.
In January 2024, a Thai fishing boat was raided by the Myanmar Navy, resulting in the death of one crew member and injuries to others. A total of 31 crew members, including four Thai nationals and 27 Myanmar nationals, were arrested and subsequently sentenced to incarceration in Kawthaung Prison, Myanmar.
After the incident, Thai authorities initiated negotiations with Myanmar for the release of the four Thai fishermen. The Thai government announced that the Myanmar authorities would release the fishermen on January 4, 2025, coinciding with Myanmar's National Day.
There has been no coordination from the Koh Song Provincial Security Agency regarding the release of the four Thais," a Thai security official said. "The only communication has come from central authorities in Thailand, with no official response from the Myanmar side."
The official further explained that the Thai Embassy had facilitated a visit by the families of the detained fishermen to Kawthaung Prison on Friday.
However, Thai security agencies in Ranong province have not received any official confirmation of the release from Myanmar authorities.
"The final decision regarding the release of the four fishermen rests with the highest authorities in Naypyidaw," the official said. "It is possible that the fishermen may still be detained under Myanmar law."
