Hua Hin bombs kill one, injure many

12 Aug 2016

HUA HIN - "Double-tap" bomb explosions outside a neighbourhood bar Thursday night killed one woman and wounded at least 15 people in the Prachuap Khiri Khan province resort, reports from the scene said.

Reports said as many as 20 people were wounded by the twin explosives, 20 minutes apart, on the eve of a long holiday weekend meant to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty the Queen and Mother's Day.

Municipality police chief, Pol Col Sutthichai Srisopacharoenrat, said the som tam food-cart operator in front of the beer bar was close to the first blast and badly wounded. She died of her wounds after she was rushed to hospital.

"At least five" foreigners were among the wounded, according to Pol Col Sutthichai. Two were reported by hospital officials to be British, while the nationalitieis of three other wounded people were unknown.

Reporters on the scene said via Twitter two bombs hidden in plant pots 50 metres apart were detonated by mobile phones at about 10pm and 10.20.

The reports said the explosions were in a popular night-life area, outside a beer bar at Soi Bintabat, near the Fah Pah intersection in Hua Hin municipality.

The area in central Hua Hin municipality is a popular night-life section of the town, especially for visitors, Thai and foreign alike. It is dotted with beer bars and shops that stay open late and attract holidaymakers.

The second bomb exploded 20 minutes after the first. This "double-tap" is common in the deep South, where insurgents set off one bomb, then explode a second, often larger device to maximise casualties among officials who arrive to investigate, as well as curious bystanders.

All the casualties occurred in the second explosion, police said, after crowds gathered around the area of the first blast.

Briton Mark Gainsford told the BBC he had been in a bar near the blasts: "I heard people shouting 'Bomb! Bomb!' but I didn't hear any blast.

"I ran out to see if I could help. I saw eight to 10 people injured, on the floor. The police arrived very quickly."

Hua Hin district officials mobilised doctors to help the wounded.

All entertainment places were ordered closed as a safety measure in case there would be more bombs.

Earlier Thursday, an explosion at a Trang street market killed a male vendor and wounded at least five bystanders.

Another bomb went off in Trang, further to the south of Hua Hin, not far from the Malaysian border. The extreme south of Thailand is no stranger to bombings and murders, but this is the first time it's ever happened in Trang.

The fact that it happened on the same day as the Hua Hin bombing sounds like more than mere coincidence to me.

Along with trying to find the culprits, my question is why? What are these terrorists trying to accomplish? What do they want?

Bomb blast stuns Trang

THE NATION
August 12, 2016

A rare explosion at a market in the southern province of Trang left one person dead and seven others injured yesterday.

Authorities denied any links between the deadly explosion and insurgency in the southern border region. They pointed to business conflict as a possible motive.

Hunt was on for a man suspected of placing a bag containing an improvised bomb and leaving it at a pavilion located about 800 metres from the Provincial Hall, Government Spokesman Maj-General Sansern Kaewkamnerd said.

He said the incident had nothing to do with insurgency attacks in the deep South.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed local authorities to step up security at key locations to prevent a repeat of such violence, the spokesman said.

Yesterday's blast in Trang initially was found to have no connection with insurgency in the deep South, according to Defence Ministry spokesman Maj-General Kongcheep Tantrawanit.

He said security officials suspected business conflict between local residents to be the motive for the attack.

The explosion occurred at the Centre Point afternoon market on Ruenrom Road in Muang district. Most of the victims were vendors waiting for the market to open in the evening.

Images of two suspects were captured on nearby CCTV cameras.

The dead man was identified as Picherd Wiriyanupappong, a 50-year-old vendor at the market. His wife, Wanthanee, 45, also a vendor, was injured in the chest.

Picherd is the younger brother of The Nation's Sport Editor Preechachan Wiriyanupappong, who said yesterday in Bangkok that his brother and Picherd's wife were at their stall in the market when the explosion occurred.

Preechachan, who was heading home, said his family was informed by local doctors that his brother had succumbed to injuries in his back.

Police Major Sunan Sangsawat, the inspector of Trang district police station, said the explosion happened at Centre Point market, which is 100 metres from Trang Provincial Hall and opposite the Trang Provincial Election Commission Office.

He said police saw many injured people being assisted at the bomb site.

Rescue services transported injured victims to a nearby hospital amid the chaos, and some areas were cordoned off for safety reasons.

Other injured victims were identified as Nattapong Sae Loei, 19, who sustained injuries to his leg and back; Wilairat Plongnangchai, 35, who was injured on her foot; and Hama Manlee, 44, who sustained a wounded knee. Supisa Pannara, 39, was wounded on her right thigh; Rampan Pha-ngam, 37, was injured on his back and waist, and Rungthip Kongpinitkij, 53, sustained wounds on her leg, hand and thigh.

Wanwimol Niamsom, 32, one of the traders who witnessed the incident, said the bomb exploded exactly at 3pm while traders were preparing to open their shops.

It detonated at a pavilion where seven to eight people were sitting.

"I saw people collapse on the ground and cry out in pain. I suspect the bomb was planted there and was detonated by a timer,'' Wanwimol said.

Former prime minister Chuan Leekpai, who was an MP in the province for almost 50 years, said photos from the scene were terrifying. He said Trang province had never encountered such violence before, adding that he would visit the area today to give moral support to residents.

Trang Governor Dejrath Simsiri yesterday said the area that was hit was supposed to open at 6pm as a walking street, which would allow shops to occupy three out the road's four lanes, leaving only one lane for traffic.

He said experts were currently investigating the nature of the bomb, and trying to determine if the attack was meant to inflict casualties or sow chaos. He added that he did not think it was a terrorist attack.

Dejrath added that all the wounded victims were being treated and in stable condition.

The governor also urged the public to have patience as the case is being investigated.

"We cannot identify the culprits behind this bombing yet, and we have to wait for officers to look at all the evidence and conclude the investigation. There are many witnesses," he added.

Apparently happened around 10:30pm last night. Soi Bintabat is Party Central in Hua Hin, always very busy at around that time, full of tourists. Our townhouse is about four blocks away, but we heard nothing. There should be more news about this today. Apparently one poor soul was killed ... a Thai lady who operates a Som Tum cart. Twenty or so foreigners injured.
We go to Soi Bintabat every so often for drinks, dinner, and to play snooker in one of our favourite bars.

http://m.bangkokpost.com/topstories/1059140 ... has a few photos of Bintabat.
Cheers ... ( and just one more reason why I love living in Thailand )

That is too close for comfort. I'm glad you weren't there. Even if you were there but weren't hurt, it would have been a traumatic experience. I hope nobody you know was hurt.

Please keep us informed if you hear anything more that isn't published in the media.

According to the BBC another bomb has exploded on Phuket in the Patong area. As of yet no one is claiming responsibility. I am with GB, what do they want and why do they think that killing innocent people will help them get it?

Arctic55 may very well turn out to be correct that these bombings are some sort of response to the referendum. One thing they have in common - so far it's all been on Thailand's west side.

Now there have been more bombings - one in Phuket and one in Surat Thani, more bombings in Hua Hin - and a major fire in Trang. It is not known yet whether the fire was caused by a bombing, arson, or a cause that has nothing to do with the bombings, but that would be a hell of a coincidence too.

Apparently police have now blocked off access to downtown Hua Hin. Smiles - anything you can tell us?

Some sort of insane group apparently is trying to throw Thailand into a panic.

Here are the news items so far:

Panic, as more bombs hit Hua Hin Friday morning

Bombs on Thursday night killed one person and wounded seven foreigners and 13 Thais, while two more bombs exploded in the centre of the resort town Friday morning, wounding five more people.

Local department stores Hua Hin Market Village and Tesco forced customers to leave the stores, and both bolted their doors, according to a report by Thai Rath TV.

Police in Hua Hin asked the public to stay in their homes to ensure safety.

Friday's explosions occured near the Hua Hin clock tower, shortly after the conclusion of a Buddhist alms-giving ceremony held to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's birthday and Mother's Day.

The ceremony ended at around 8am, and organisers were starting to clear the area when the first device exploded at around 9am.

Just moments later, a second bomb exploded nearby. Four men and a woman were injured in the blasts. Hospital officials said one was in critical condition.

Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officiers were able to destroy a third bomb found planted on a motorcycle parked in nearby Wat Hua Hin about 10am.

Fire engulfs Lee Mart supermarket in Trang

by Methee Muangkaew

A fire caused major damage at a local department store Lee Mart Super Ka Song in Trang town early Friday.

No one was injured but the entire three-storey building may be a write-off, with estimated damages of 100 million baht.

The fire was reported to police at around 4am Friday, 10 hours after a bomb in Trang’s Walking Street market killed one person.

Police were investigating whether the Lee Mart fire was caused by a bomb, but said it might also be arson or even an electrical short-circuit.

About 50 police officers and soldiers, firefighter teams and more than 20 water trucks rushed to the scene in tambon Tubtiang in Muang district, Trang municipality.

Nguad Hengchuan, 65, a security guard at the department store said about 3am, the smell of smoke awoke him. He said he heard "an explosion and loud noise" and saw flames from the floor above him.

He ran to safety and called for help. There was no one else in the store, which was locked from the outside after hours.

Chantip Rangsiprakan, vice mayor of Trang Municipality, said it was difficult to control the fire as firemen could not contact the owner to open the store. It took more than three hours to control the fire.

Lee Mart, originally called Diamond Department Store, opened about 30 years ago.

The blast killed Jongkolnee Pumkrachang, 52 and injured three other bystanders.

The second bomb exploded exactly 30 minutes later in front of Muang district police station, about 400 metres from the first blast. No one was injured from this incident.

Police said both bombs were triggered by mobile phone.

Some not so pretty photos. (Both copied from a ThaiVisa thread on the HH bombings).
I'm not particularly naive regarding incidents like this in-the-world, but it's always a shock when they happen in one's back yard.

This little corner bar in which I have knocked down numerous beers over the years.

Say no more ...

I have not yet gone downtown, so no idea whats happening. I doubt the whole city has been shut down, but certainly the Entertaiment Zone will be a lonely and forlorn neighbourhood tonight.
