Smoked bats from China found by a Beagle at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Smoked bats and smoked pork were found in luggage from China by a sniffer Beagle at the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The Department of Livestock Development (DLD) reported the odd find yesterday (November 9th).

The Inspector Beagle from the Quarantine and Inspection Canine unit (DLD) at the Suvarnabhumi Airport found the suspected luggage from Kunming, China and alerted officers by barking that something was in the luggage.

Officers opened the luggage to find 2.5 kilograms of smoked bats, 2.5 kilograms of smoked ham, and 4.5 kilograms of smoked bacon.

The smuggling of animals and products of animal origin are prohibited items according to the Animal Epidemic Act B.E.2558 (2015). Officers seized those smoked animals for further testing and destroying.

Officers noted that pork could carry the African swine fever and bats could carry the Nipah virus which can lead to fatalities.

It was unclear who was responsible for the luggage or what happened to them.
