From reading the article, if casinos come to pass it appears to me that Thais as well as farang will be allowed to gamble. I think that would be the best choice. Gambling has been an ongoing problem in Thailand and has been against the law.

Maybe the power-that-be have finally figured out that Thais who want to gamble are going to find ways to do it, whether legally or illegally, and so far the only ones who profit by it are the criminals that set up online gambling centers in Thailand. Illegal casinos are also common. Many get caught, but who knows how many more are out there and don't get caught?

I hope the powers-that-be go ahead with this and stop both trying to legislate morality and trying to protect people from themselves. Neither work and never will.

Most Thai oppose casino legalisation: poll

12 December, 2021

A majority of people do not agree with a proposal to legalise casinos and are of the opinion that other forms of gambling such as on video and online games should also remain against the law, according to the result of a survey conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration, or Nida Poll.

The poll was conducted by telephone interviews between Dec 6-8 with 1,318 people aged 18 and over of various levels of education and occupations throughout the country.

A huge majority - 93.70% - of the people polled said they had never visited a casino; 4.40% said they had done so while abroad; 0.91% said they had done so inside Thailand; and 0.08% were not sure.

Asked to how they felt about a proposal to legalise casinos, a majority - 56.83% - did not agree with it, saying that casinos caused family conflicts, debt problems and crime. Moreover, Thailand is a Buddhist country were where casinos should not be allowed to exist.

On the other side, 21.25% strongly agreed with the proposal, saying that if casinos were legal, the government would be able to collect taxes from them, Thai people would not have to travel abroad to gamble and there were casinos operating in the country anyway. A further 18.13% somewhat agreed, reasoning that casinos could help spur the country's economy and allow money to circulate in the country.

The rest, 3.79%, had no comment or were not interested.

Asked about betting on video games and online gambling, 68.51% said neither should be legalised; 23.37% said both should be allowed; 2.28% said video games should be legalised; and 2.05% said online gambling should be permitted by law. The rest, 3.79%, had no comment.

A total of 60 people were named as committee members in the announcement.

The issue of legal casinos has been widely discussed, from income to religious taboos. Thai government forms ‘Casino Committee’ to consider legalized gambling entertainment complex opening

By Nop Meechukhun

4 February 2022

Thailand’s Royal Gazette yesterday, February 3rd, announced the establishment of a ‘Casino Committee’ to study and consider the potential opening of a legalized gambling entertainment complex to solve illegal gambling problems and boost the domestic economy.

A total of 60 people were listed as committee members in the announcement, including Thai Civilized Party leader Mongkolkit Suksintharanon who had constantly proposed for legal casinos and sex workers.

The committee would study the legal measures and the collection of income and taxes from the casino businesses to prevent and solve illegal gambling and online gambling problems.

It was previously discussed at the House of Representatives last year that the target areas for the establishments of legal casinos could be in various popular tourism provinces, such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, and Pattaya (Chonburi).

TPN notes, however, that some members of the committee have since proposed the complex in a “lesser-known” province or area to drive tourism and traffic, without specifically naming a proposal area. Meanwhile, some leading Pattaya tourism officials and associations, unsurprisingly, have stated they would welcome the complex in the Pattaya area and saw it as a development that could further drive traffic to Pattaya.
