New vaccine on the horizon for Thailand

Post by Gaybutton »

I notice something peculiar about this article. Not what it says, but what it doesn't say. It doesn't say this vaccine is a vaccination against Covid. The word "Covid" doesn't appear in the article at all.

I would think the assumption is this is a vaccine against Covid, but the author ought to at least make that clear. Maybe this vaccine fights Covid. Maybe it also fights other diseases too.

Oh well - they want volunteers to test the vaccine. Where do I sign up . . . ?

Vaccine developed by Thai startup to be tested on humans in September

by The Nation

July 18, 2021

The government has said that a potential vaccine derived from plant protein, or subunit vaccine, which uses the same technology as Novavax, could be ready for production in a few weeks.

Deputy government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said the factory was ready to produce the vaccine.

The vaccine has been developed by Baiya Phytopharm Co Ltd, a Thai startup company.

A subunit vaccine presents one or more antigens to the immune system without introducing pathogen particles, whole or otherwise.

The research team will send the factory form to the Food and Drug Administration to inspect the factory.

The vaccine is expected to begin production in the next few weeks and will undergo early human testing around September 2021 as planned.

The team will officially seek in August about 100 volunteers who are in good health, aged between 18-55 years and 65-75 years.

Once the vaccine passes the process successfully, it is expected that it can be produced for Thai people to use in the middle of 2022. People will receive two vaccinations, three weeks apart, and it will sell at around THB300-500 per dose.

I agree it would have been helpful if they had mentioned what the Thai developed vaccine was to do. Apparently it is a COVID-19 vaccine as it references using the same technology as Novavax which is a COVID-19 vaccine: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/arch ... ne/619276/
At the end of January, reports that yet another COVID-19 vaccine had succeeded in its clinical trials—this one offering about 70 percent protection—were front-page news in the United States, and occasioned push alerts on millions of phones. But when the Maryland-based biotech firm Novavax announced its latest stunning trial results last week, and an efficacy rate of more than 90 percent even against coronavirus variants, the response from the same media outlets was muted in comparison. The difference, of course, was the timing: With three vaccines already authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the nation is “awash in other shots” already, as the The New York Times put it.

As far as I know the Novavax vaccine has not been approved in the US, EU, UK or anywhere. They apparently finished phase 3 trials months ago, but are delaying submission of data. That does not sound promising.

I suppose Thailand could avoid whatever problems Novavax have, but wouldn't count on it.

Here is a link to an article about the Thai vaccine in development - in this one they do note it is a COVID-19 vaccine: https://thainews.prd.go.th/en/news/deta ... 9145419793
