Trump appointed USA ambassador resigns

Post by Gaybutton »

I wonder who the Biden administration will name as the USA's next ambassador to Thailand. I hope whoever it is makes dealing with the embassy easier and more approachable - despite the fact most of us who occasionally need embassy services are merely citizens . . .

US ambassador resigns: 'It has been a privilege'

22 Jan, 2021

The United States' ambassador to Thailand, Michael George DeSombre, has resigned from his post now that the Donald Trump administration has ended.

Prior to the swearing-in of Joe Biden as US president on Wednesday, Mr DeSombre wrote on the ambassador's Twitter account, @USAmbThailand: "It has been a privilege serving as the United States Ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand.

"I am exceedingly proud of all we have done to strengthen the US-Thai relationship.

"I am signing off now from this account and leaving it in the good hands of our Embassy staff. MGD".

On Tuesday, Mr DeSombre met Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to thank the government and reaffirm the US' commitments to Thailand.

Last week, he hosted a virtual seminar, "SelectUSA: Helping Thai Companies Go Global", to strengthen the US-Thai economic partnership by bringing together business leaders from both countries under one forum.

The US is for now being represented in Thailand by Charge d'Affaires Michael Heath, and the US Consul-General for Chiang Mai, Sean K O'Neill.

In 2019, President Trump nominated Mr DeSombre as ambassador to Thailand, the first political appointee in more than 40 years.

He succeeded career diplomat Glyn Townsend Davies in March last year.
