Bangkok’s Khao San Road to fully reopen after a four-month refurbishment

Khao San Road, one of Bangkok’s most famous tourist streets, is set to reopen next month after undergoing a major renovation during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Bangkok authorities spent nearly 50 million baht to refurbish and rearrange the local vendors on the tourist landmark street from January 30 until May 18.

The brand-new street management would allow 480 street vendors to trade every day in two seven-hour shifts, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM to midnight. Each stall would be 1.5 meters wide and two meters long and would be set up on each side of the road.

According to Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang, most of the vendors would sell general products and products of the One Tambon One Product project (OTOP) while the rest of them would sell food and drinks.

Unlike the old Khao San, the sub-leasing and selling of pirated products would be forbidden and would face serious penalties by the authorities.

The governor told the Associated Press after a meeting with other executives yesterday, August 17, that the Bangkok authorities would monitor how bustling the road would be after being closed for a long renovation. They also came up with another big renovation for the other streets connected to the Khao San Road if it gave positive feedback.

He said: “So far, only a few vendors have registered to return to work at the street due to the current problematic economic status and lack of international tourists but we will see what the renovation could bring later on.”

Bangkok authorities were also preparing to improve the landscape of Rambuttri Road as a pedestrian street connecting to Khao San Road with a budget of 9 million baht. The renovation model was similar to Khao San Road with a focus on cleanliness and proper beauty for tourists and locals to enjoy and appreciate the landmarks.
