Pattaya begins water rationing

Post by Gaybutton »

Despite promises a few months ago that Pattaya has plenty of water to last at least until July, due to the drought Pattaya is going to have to start rationing water.

Why am I not surprised?

Pattaya begins water rationing

By Jetsada Homklin

April 14, 2020

The Provincial Waterworks Authority has begun rationing tap water with faucets in most Pattaya-area homes only running every other day.

With the Mabprachan Reservoir now down to 5 percent of capacity, PWA Pattaya manager Suthat Nutpan said the utility is alternating service between low-lying and elevated areas, with service cut across the board from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Those receiving water service on odd-numbered days are:

South Road, Thepprasit Road, Soi Wat Bunkachana and Soi Chaiyapruek 1, Soi Mabyailia 1-21 and Sukhumvit Soi 53 (5-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.)

Central Road’s southern side and Chaloemphrakiat Road (6 a.m. – 8 p.m.)

Soi Khao Noi (5 a.m. – 6 p.m.)

North Road’s northern side (6 a.m. – 8 p.m.)

Those receiving water service on even-numbered days are:

Pratamnak Hill (5 a.m. – 6 p.m.)

Central Road’s northern side (6 a.m. – 8 p.m.)

Sukhumvit Road near King Power, Soi Arunothai, Sois Sukhumvit 42-46/4 (6 p.m. – 8 p.m.)

Huay Yai Soi Chaiyapruek 2, Nong Heep and Khao Makok (5 a.m. – 6 p.m.)

Pong, Rung Ruang Village, Soi Mabyailia 6-18/1 (5-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.)

In other areas, water will run every day or nearly every day.

Soi Nernplubwan and Soi Tung Kom (every day 5-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m.)

Naklua Sois 25-33 and Pattayaniwed (5-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m. every day except April 15-16, 19, 23, 25, 27-28; and May 3-4, 7, 10-11 and 13).

Soi Photisan Soi 2-14, Naklua Sois 15-16 (5-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m. April 17, 20-21, 24-25 and 28-30; and May 1-2, 5, 8-9, and 12-13.)

This might seem like a mad idea, but it might just work.
Isn't it about time they started on a second reservoir for Pattaya?

Hopefully most of us will not be affected by this as long we are careful and keep our water tanks full.

The only thing mad about that idea is the fact they haven't done that already - a long time ago. And whatever happened to building that pipeline to carry water from Rayong to Pattaya? Remember that? I think we knew it would never happen the same day they first announced it.

My next question is with the reservoir so dry now that you can literally walk across it without getting wet or even encountering water (I've seen that for myself), why aren't they taking the opportunity to dredge it out and make it much deeper so it can hold much more water?

Doing something that makes sense is almost unheard of around here. With the population having grown exponentially over the past few years, there is no excuse for letting an entire city run out of water and have to resort to rationing - which is only a temporary solution if we don't start getting a lot of rain - soon. And if the monsoon season doesn't kick in early this year and start refilling the reservoir, the city could run out of water completely - and it wouldn't be the first time.

Over the past several months in Pattaya we've had almost no rain at all. Will the powers-that-be ever learn their lesson? Why do I think we all know the answer to that question . . .

No bars...no boys...no booze...and now no water :!:

They don't need roadblocks to keep people out - they need roadblocks to keep people in.

It's unbelievable that they have not planned another reservoir, or other countermeasures for the water supply.

Particularly when we see the waste in certain other current construction projects in the country.
e.g. Massive new concrete road bridges across the new rail line in Isaan. Obviously 50~100 % oversized, as is proven by the smaller bridges doing the same job on the line being built going south. Instead of the waste, why not plan projects properly & divert some of the resources to where they are most needed ?

Seems like the generals prefer roads and train sets to water supply, or for that matter, flood prevention.

They did. They planned. That's all, just planned.

Perhaps they are strong enough to support a column of armoured vehicles?

The bridges are just way longer than necessary. Like a U-shape in plan view, but after the ramp upwards, there's a completely superfluous horizontal section before the bridge turns through 180. Bridges being constructed on the southern line are of a much more sensible purpose.

Anyhow, there's no-shortage of concrete being poured in Thailand. They just prefer to waste it instead of diverting some to improve security of water supply.

According to numerous published reports pertaining to this topic, Thailand has yet to develop a long-term Water Management Strategy, and is definitely lacking in the technologies needed to support such a strategy.

If you read some of the reports regarding this stemming back to 2012, you'll see that this fact is widely acknowledged, and the talent (and experience) needed to develop such as strategy seems to be one of the missing pieces.

Without these advanced strategies and technological advancements in Thailand's Water Management, water shortages will always occur when there's not enough rain, and flooding will always occur when there is.

It's too late for Pattaya IMO. Pattaya has already imploded and the money it would take to completely overhaul the existing water systems and/or develop and install new ones, is beyond their capacity. By "imploded" I mean the population of the City has exceeded the capabilities of the infrastructure to support it. The lack of maintenance of the existing systems, and the lack of funding for new systems, has contributed to this.
