More from the Miami Herald:

Miami Herald ditches Marco Rubio to endorse Patrick Murphy—and their reasons are spot on

"The editorial staff with The Miami Herald has had a change of heart. After having a long history of supporting U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio all the way back to when he was a promising political newcomer in West Miami, they now see him differently. They say on occasion Rubio has lived up to his early promises by forging ahead with a historic compromise on immigration, but he never succeeded. They were impressed that he broke from the Republican Party majority to support Obama’s request for $2 billion in Zika emergency funding. But in many other ways, they say Sen. Rubio has been a “disappointment.”

Some of the reasons Rubio has failed the test include his relentless efforts to fight Obamacare, even though the healthcare reform brought “immeasurable relief to millions.” Rubio blocked all considerations by President Obama to fill a Supreme Court vacancy in a Republican-led “scandalous” move they call purely political — even though in the past Rubio has endorsed the current nominee.

The Miami Herald adds:

Beyond the political differences, there are issues of sincerity and character for voters to consider. First, he reneged on his unequivocal pledge not to run for re-election for a position he once openly disdained — but only after he lost his bid for the Republican presidential nomination to his nemesis, Donald Trump. Then he endorsed Mr. Trump, whom he called a con man during the campaign. And still at this late date, he continues to stand by that endorsement, even as the Republican candidate stumbles from gaffe to insult to outrage.

Mr. Trump’s candidacy is a test of character, and Sen. Rubio is failing that test. How can voters believe he’s sincere when he says he does not share Mr. Trump’s awful views on Mexicans, immigrants, Muslims, women, etc., yet — at the same time — stands by his endorsement of the New York billionaire? His act is unconvincing. It reeks of political convenience rather than political conviction.
The Herald’s editorial staff accuses Rubio of using the June massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando as “means to get into the race,” but has a “disastrous” record on LGBT issues, reminding us Rubio opposed equal marriage and LGBT rights to adopt. Rubio also voted against giving LGBT Americanf workplace protections.

On the other hand, the editorial staff says Democratic U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, Rubio’s opponent is still untested, but like many Democrats, Murphy has had little chance to show what he can do, given the six years of obstruction by the Republican-led Congress.

What is clear, however, is that Rep. Murphy will fight for the right issues, as he stated in his debate with Sen. Rubio on Monday. He supports the diplomatic opening to Cuba, reasonable gun-control measures, the Affordable Care Act, measures to rein in climate change and Roe v. Wade — as well as comprehensive immigration reform and filling the Supreme Court vacancy.
The editorial staff ends their recommendation with the statement:

“For the U.S. Senate, the Miami Herald recommends PATRICK MURPHY.”"

This endorsement by the Miami Herald may finally end an era of too much influence by too few Cuban Americans that have been pro anything republican and anti anything democratic since the failed "Bay of Pigs" invasion.

This election has provided moments that on any given day could be described as astounding, predictable, humorous, entertaining, disgusting (add your own, please). But it's becoming increasingly clear that whatever occurs on Nov. 8, America will not quickly heal. I'm old enough to recall elections dating back to Eisenhower ('53) and I can't recall the gap of the political--and civil--divide that this one has managed to produce. This one ignites emotions I'm still trying to satisfactorily identify. In 2008, there were certainly racial overtones but this seems different. And although some of it has to do with Hillary being the first woman to get within striking distance, I believe there's something else, something harder to define. This NY Time piece describes it while not necessarily explaining it.

The second link divulges Clinton's top donors. I wasn't exactly shocked to learn that a hedge fund manager leads the pack at $20.6 million.

'The New Yorker' has now endorsed Hillary Clinton.
The act of the endorsement itself is no surprise. The magazine has ~ for at least a year now ~ been a field of dreams for no-holds-barred critiques of both candidates, but definitely the cards were, in general, bad flop-overs for Trump.
But this endorsement comes with an editorial inspiring in it's bluntness. A literate and quite devastating wrap-up of why Trump deserves not even a single vote this November.

According to the latest CNN electoral map, Trump will have 179 electoral votes and Clinton will have 307 electoral votes. There are 52 electoral votes in the "battleground states," which means even if Trump gets all of them, he would have 231 electoral votes - still 39 electoral votes short of the 270 needed to win.

Unless something radically changes before November 8, it's quite clear Hillary Clinton will win the election.

If Trump really wants to refuse to accept the election results, let him. Who cares? Let him stomp his feet and have his tantrum. He may not even have time to dispute the election. He'll be too busy suing all those women who are lying about his sexual conduct. None of that will prevent Hillary Clinton from being sworn in as President of the United States on Friday, January 20, 2017. I'm picturing Trump quoting Franklin Roosevelt and calling it "A date which will live in infamy."

My own hope is she not only wins, but gets a Democrat House of Representatives and Senate along with it, bringing an end to the gridlock that plagued the Obama administration. It also would be great if the Democrats get the state and local elections along with it.

Just a heads up to let you know "Michael Moore in Trumpland" is available on Piratebay. I just watched it and although I've always liked Moore, but thought he was often over the top, I thought this piece was masterful.

1927 news report: Donald Trump's dad arrested in KKK brawl with cops

According to a New York Times article published in June 1927, a man with the name and address of Donald Trump's father was arraigned after Klan members attacked cops in Queens, N.Y.

nyttrump In an article subtitled "Klan assails policeman", Fred Trump is named in among those taken in during a late May "battle" in which "1,000 Klansmen and 100 policemen staged a free-for-all." At least two officers were hurt during the event, after which the Klan's activities were denounced by the city's Police Commissioner, Joseph A. Warren.

“The Klan not only wore gowns, but had hoods over their faces almost completely hiding their identity,” Warren was quoted as saying in the article, which goes on to identify seven men “arrested in the near-riot of the parade.”

Named alongside Trump are John E Kapp and John Marcy (charged with felonious assault in the attack on Patrolman William O'Neill and Sgt. William Lockyear), Fred Lyons, Thomas Caroll, Thomas Erwin, and Harry J Free. They were arraigned in Jamaica, N.Y. All seven were represented by the same lawyers, according to the article.

The final entry on the list reads: “Fred Trump of 175-24 Devonshire Road, Jamaica, was discharged.”

In 1927, Donald Trump's father would have been 21 years old, and not yet a well-known figure. Multiple sources report his residence at the time—and throughout his life—at the same address.

To be clear, this is not proof that Trump senior—who would later go on to become a millionaire real estate developer—was a member of the Ku Klux Klan or even in attendance at the event. Despite sharing lawyers with the other men, it's conceivable that he may have been an innocent bystander, falsely named, or otherwise the victim of mistaken identity during or following a chaotic event.

The name of Trump's grandfather, Friedrich Drumpf, was anglicized to Frederick Trump, but he died several years before the report.

A person answering calls at the N.Y.C. Police Department's Records Section said that arrest reports dating that far back were not available in any form. We've sent a formal request in writing and will update if and when we receive a response. We've also left a message with the Trump Campaign requesting a callback.

The article, published on June 1, 1927, describes police frustration at rowdy parades, the Klan's use of masks, and its growing presence in New York City. The Klan, originally founded in the 19th century, was reborn in 1915 as a violent supremacist organization associated with lynchings, white nationalism, and the distinctive white robes and hoods used by Klansmen to conceal their identity at parades and other events. At its mid-1920s peak, it had up to 6m members, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Fred Trump, who died in 1999, was a New York real estate developer and the father of mogul and presidential candidate Donald Trump. Born in the Bronx to German immigrants, Fred became a real estate developer in his teens; at about the time of his apparent arrest, he was constructing single-family houses in Queens, according to his obituary in the Times. At his death, his net worth was estimated at between $250m and $300m. A savvy businessman and real estate developer, his wealth enabled the junior Trump to start big.

If the man arrested at the riotous Klan parade was indeed Donald's father, it would not be his last tangle with the law over issues concerning minorities. A 1979 article, published by Village Voice, reported on a civil rights suit that alleged that the Trumps refused to rent to black home-seekers, and quotes a rental agent who said Fred Trump instructed him not to rent to blacks and to encourage existing black tenants to leave. The case was settled in a 1975 consent degree described as "one of the most far-reaching ever negotiated," but the Justice Department subsequently complained that continuing "racially discriminatory conduct by Trump agents has occurred with such frequency that it has created a substantial impediment to the full enjoyment of equal opportunity."

Donald Trump has made nativism a pillar of his campaign, describing Mexican immigrants as rapists and two Boston men who beat a homeless immigrant as "passionate" fans.

The events described in the Times' article took place 22 years before Donald Trump was even born, and he’s not responsible for any youthful sins his father may have committed. But given the racially-charged tone of the younger Trump's campaign, it raises questions about the values he was taught by the man whose fortune he inherited.

Why Colin Powell is voting for Hillary Clinton

by Rebecca Shabad

CBS News
October 25, 2016

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday said he plans to vote for Hillary Clinton for president, his spokesperson confirmed to CBS News.

Powell, who served under President George W. Bush, revealed his decision to support Clinton at a luncheon on Long Island, according to Newsday reporter Robert Brodsky. There are exactly 14 days left until Election Day on Nov. 8.

At the event, Powell told attendees that he’s voting for Clinton because Donald Trump “insults us every day” and is “selling people a bill of goods,” Brodsky reported.

In September 2015, Powell said he was still a Republican even after endorsing and voting for President Obama twice.

Powell has criticized Trump before, according to emails that were made public by a website called DCLeaks after his Gmail account was hacked into. The emails showed Powell telling a former aide that Trump is a “national disgrace and an international pariah.”

The hacked emails also revealed tensions between Powell and Clinton’s campaign over her use of private email servers as secretary of state.

“Sad thing... HRC could have killed this two years ago by merely telling everyone honestly what she had done and not tie me into it. I told her staff three times not to try that gambit. I had to throw a mini tantrum at a Hampton’s party to get their attention.”

In August, Powell told People magazine that Clinton’s campaign aides had been trying to blame him for her use of private email servers. In September, House Democrats highlighted a newly-released email exchange between Clinton and Powell right after she took over the cabinet position in 2009 in which he talked about skirting State Department servers.

Powell served as secretary of state from January 2001 through January 2005 and had previously served under President George H.W. Bush as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and under President Ronald Reagan as national security adviser.
