we got -of course also a b+W TV, when I was in grade 3-age 8/9, and TV started at 20.00-the NEWS journal-when anyone had to remain silent, while dad watched in earnest, and it lasted till also 22.00 or so-only on sats were we allowed to see it all, but clad in pyama.
Before that we could go on wednesday (early school) at 17.00 to a nearby church-local, where there was high on a stilt a TV-pay 10 cts to see th special 1/week children program with around 100 other younsgters.
It was also dead normal to help out during holidays on the family shop-children labour!! would be screamed today.
Hot food at night was potatoes, 1 veg and maybe-if the sunday roast supply lasted, a tiny piece of meat. I was oldest-so my clothes went down the rank of the younger siblings. On the days before Xmas-mum would give us a treat by taking us into big own on sundays (when all shops were closed) to see the showrooms with all the moving figures-so that we could not scream to go inside and buy something.Maybe that is why TH is still so appealing-many of those habits survive on.

Pretty damn scary, TW, I remember most of those.

Okay, for those fading fast, remember the milk wagons with ice blocks that the dairys used to deliver milk in bottles to your home (and did your first home have a milk chute)? Khun TW is a few years younger than me but I'll bet he has no recollection of that as I think the practice ended by about 1953 or 1954. And I don't know if this type of milk delivery happened throughout the US or in other countries.

I never knew you were from the GDR, Christian.

You must have been quite young when the Wall came down?

This brings back some school memories for me. I remember one of the first things we had to learn was the German names of the German-speaking countries.

Switzerland became Die Schweiz and Austrian became Osterreich.

That was bad enough...but Germany became Deutchland, (surely that should be the name for the Netherlands?) and the we had to remember the West Germany was the BDR and East Germany was the DDR

I got barked at by the teacher for pronouncing it "Dee-Dee-Orr (the way you would pronounce those letters in God's Own language - English) rather than Day-Day-Orr, the way you pronounced it in the Teutonic Devils language.

Then a few years later, by the time my sister was learning, the whole GDR/BDR thing was gone by the wayside (yeah, i know the whole thing became the BDR, but the teachers no longer bothered about that...it was all just Deutschland).
