Watch out for "Rove Beetles"

Post by Montree »

My Thai boyfriend is currently away from his Bangkok apartment and staying near his mother in very rural Ratachaburi. In a video call yesterday he showed me the effects of a “Rove Beetle” on his neck. I’d never heard of them but using a link he sent me I discovered that it’s not actually a bite but the beetle releases a caustic liquid which causes painful blistering. He’s been told the result could last up to three weeks. He said they are very common this year in Ratchaburi but he didn’t think they were many in Pattaya. So along with mosquitoes and the risks of Dengue Fever and Malaria keep an eye out for Rove Beetles!

As long as I have lived in Pattaya I have never seen and have never heard of this insect. That doesn't mean there aren't any, so definitely be careful. They are not the only dangerous insects.
